I thought it might be of interest to start a thread regarding Submariner Gallantry awards.

We are all aware of the accolades presented to Wanklyn, Linton, Phillips and the like, but what of the lower decks?

While researching 'Ursula' I found Alfred James Mallett, described as:

"The most decorated lower deck Submariner of the Second World War"

He was awarded:

DSM- Ursula, 1940
DSM- Una, 1942
MiD- Una, 1943
DSM- Terrapin, 1945.

He rose from L/s on Ursula (D/JX.130986), to CPO.

Sadly I dont know anymore details about him but I thought it would be interesting to hear about other multi-decorated Submariners.

I worked for a shipyard in Mombasa in the 1970s and my boss was Andy Crook who earned a DSM and MBE for services in subs. On the wall in his office was a picture of a U boat, it turned out he was an ERA on HMS Graph the ex U 570. See pic of him at the controls of one of the engines.
