Excellent photos, they do provide a very close look at this ship. I will in a few weeks time post a line drawing showing "the next step on". This project, on a KIROV hull, had the same SS N arrangement in two banks of eight, but also had a forward pair of SS N 14 ASW missiles.

It had a pair of 100mm turrets placed side by side astern. (X position).

The AA protection was based on at least one SA N 6 group, three SA N 4 groups and eight AK 630 30mm gatlings.

Ten deck mounted 533 mm TT (2 lots of 5) and several RBU ASW rocket launchers completed the ships defence.

There were at least four PK 2 decoy launchers.

However, as so many times in the ex URSS, this plan fell through and the slava and kirov designs retained.

Sorry not to be able to post it right now, but it is not possible at the moment

Best wishes to all

There is a rumour about on certain RU sites that the UKRAINIA, a partly finished SLAVA class which was "given" to Ukraine in the past, may be transferred back to the Russian Navy.
This would certainly be a more political than strategic move and one must wonder about the actual state of this ship, more rust than paint ? Can it possibly go back into service one day?

Refering to post N° 4, here is a project which "might have been" but would have normally used a part of the layout of SLAVA and the hull of KIROV

Wow, thanx Morrison:)

Like the much cheaper (I guess) Slavas... really poor damage control capabilities, with all those huge sandbox/silex fixed on the bridge! Soviet tactics never went beyond a "first strike and run away at full speed" scenario? (e.g. Kashin mod).

A pair of bow views of the "offensive" end of the hero of the Black Sea battles versus that fearsome Georgian "Fleet"! One Harpoon hit in the middle of those launchers...KA-BOOM!

Hopefully neither type of missile will ever be used......ok, so I'm a dreamer. DFO :D

??????????? Do you mean BOTH Moskva and P. Veliky are in Vladivostock, as I said?? I did see that Moskva had visited Manila in the last week or so, but apparently not P. Veliky, too. DFO

The CREAM of the Russian Fleet is now in Vladivostok........

Russian warships gather at Far East for drills

English.news.cn 2010-05-26

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Three Russian flagships have gathered at the Far East region for the upcoming large-scale naval exercises, said a spokesman for the Pacific Fleet on Wednesday.

The Moskva missile cruiser as flagship of the Black Sea fleet arrived at a naval base near Vladivostok on Wednesday, uniting with Pyotr Veliky the nuclear guided-missile cruiser of the Northern Fleet and guided-missile cruiser Varyag of the Pacific Fleet.

The spokesman said the three warships will set off for the Sea of Japan "to complete combat training tasks and hold naval drills," with the exact date of the drills yet to be determined, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The naval drills were reported previously as part of the Vostok-2010 large-scale strategic exercise this summer.

On May 19, the Russian Defense Ministry said Pyotr Veliky completed three-day naval exercises in the Sea of Japan, which has also conducted exercises in the South China Sea with Moskva a week earlier.

Russia announced in 2007 that it was building up its naval presence across the world.

Concerning post #9, I've found a series of photos of UKRAINIA. They are of very poor quality for the majority, so will attach only one. If the ship seems OK, the decks seemed to be littered with various debris and in need of repair......

r.morrison

Apparently concerning UKRAINIA two "rumours" appear to go about :

EITHER : Ukraine wishes to give the ship back to Russia and Russia will finish it and put it in to service (far from evident....)

OR : Russia will help UKRAINE to finish this ship to put it into service in the UKR navy (even less likely I think.....)

It could also end up on the beach at ALANG:(

:eek:It seems that the long-delayed fourth Slava is going to be put in service... after 20 years.

Well this confirms the various rumours on the go for the past few weeks.

However, the hulk does seem to be in a shockingly bad condition......

VARYAG has arrived in the US......

It must be a moment since a Russian missile cruiser has sailed under the Golden Gate.....(the second photo on this link is WELL worth a good look)

Imho, fitting out Ukraina does not make much sense in modern warfare: the Slavas were largely outdated already in the 80s, with their 60s-style radars and Ecm (Top Pair, Top Steer on Moskva and Admiral Ustinov, Side globe), impractical weapons (ss-n-12 sandbox), and - I guess - cramped living conditions. The AAW is quite impressive, but only one Top Dome means no full coverage (because of the ship mast just behind).

It only makes sense considering the poor state of russian shipbulding: no facilities or tech background anymore for launching big hulks, so it could be easier completing an old one.

Sad looking hulk, with outdated equipment in what state of misrepair?? Good luck making an effective fighting unit out of the hulk. OTOH, should be pretty powerful....against GEORGIAN Navy, assuming the 5.1" work! DFO

A pair of pics of the rusty hulk....good luck getting her functional! Of course with enough time and $$$; almost anything is possible. However, 80s electronics, wiring and seals that old.....hope she has good PUMPS!

OTOH...a glamor shot of the VARYAG supposedly taken before her recent voyage to San Francisco. Certainly shows-dramatically-her sleek hull and those big bad SSM launchers!...........DFO :D
