There were numerous battalions raised from Cities and Even Trades that were allowed to stay together for "Moral" and "Efficiency".This practise was dropped instantly after the First day of the Somme.There is a brilliant fictional book by John Harris called "Covenant with death" Which tells the fictional story of one such regiment(Loosely based on the Sheffield Pals) from recruitment to final decimation on the Somme.For those who have not read it,its well worth a read,and available on Amazon.:(:(:( Regards Steve.

This an excellent book, that I bought decades ago. It descibes the making of the Sheffield Pals Battalion, the interaction between the various factions of men from disparate classes;and their ultimate destruction in the deadly hail of shot and shell from the well entrenched enemy.Thank God, for once the"donkeys" had to heed the public outcry.

Hi All

EXcellent book about an extremely stupid idea. Whole towns were stripped of their young men and produced a lot of spinsters. Accrington in Lancashire springs to mind.

This is a very good book. Amongst the others in the series are those by Jon Cooksey and 'Barnsley Pals', and the 'Leeds Pals' by Laurie Milner. I paid a visit to the Rotherham Local Archives last week looking through the newspapers for 1915, and there is a wealth of information on some of those men who served and died with the York and Lancaster Regiment. I was also surprised to read that over 3,000 men from Rov'ram were serving with the Royal Naval Division at this time. Now there's a piece of research for anyone who is interested!

Dave

Rob -I cannot find your 3000 Rotherham men serving with the RND in 1915;
but I can find 3000 Rotherham who were serving in the !/5th,2/5th and 3/5th TF Btns of the York and Lancaster Regt.in 1915.
