I've been trying to find out the mottos for a couple of Royal Navy ships, HMS Swiftsure (WWII light cruiser) and HMS Plymouth (Rothesay class). I've looked everywhere online and can't find anything. Please help!
Regards
Checking Stopford's "Admiralty Ship's Badges" (which includes mottos etc) - no motto was ever approved for either ship.

That's too bad. I was under the impression that all named ships in the RN had a motto, especially one with the pedigree that Swiftsure has. Thanks though for checking and I think I'll be getting a copy of that book you checked in. Might come in handy.

Most,if not all of the badges designed by Charles ffoulkes 1919-1935 had motto's, done by him.The attachment shows how it is done now.

A belated Happy Easter to everyone. :) I hope you all had a great holiday. Since we were blessed with temps in the 70's and sunny skies, we did something new and had a cookout instead of the usual holiday dinner. The wife was definitely happy and so was I, since I love grilling! :D Anyways, this question is about HMS Cavalier. I'm wondering if she had a motto and if so, what it was?
Thanks in advance

Warship Profile #32 on HMS Cavalier has a representation of her badge surmounting the motto "Of One Company". Hopefully someone from the HMS Cavalier Association can confirm or correct this.

You are indeed correct; i don't need to look it up! now for the follow-up, how many other ships had a motto as well? how formal was such a thing? I do not recall any of my father's ships having a motto (I remember my school one tho!!)
My father's motto which goes under the Arms is
"Flexible but firm of purpose"
there you go

There were hundreds of ships with motto's some 'official' some unofficial.
Some ship's even had their motto's changed when a new ship took the name.
If you check out the ships badges thread all the badges done so far for Royal Navy ships have the motto's included where applicable and the info is bang up to date.

Tim, Here's 3 of your Dad's ships that I know of that did have motto's.
Ashanti....'Kum apin apin baba' Kill a thousand, a thousand will come.
Hermes... 'Altiora Peto' I seek higher things.
Urchin.... 'Armatus ad defendum' Armed to defend.
