View Full Version : Trying to ID a ships location

I recently came across this photo of HMS Exeter that I had not seen before.

I was wondering if anyone can positively ID the location?

Unfortunately this is the best resolution/size image I have, but if enlarged one can see that the crew are in summer or tropic dress. To the right is a row of warehouses along the waterfront and some very substantial buildings in the intermediate background. To the left background is another ‘substantial’ building with a clock on its face. And judging by Exeter's 'fittings' it is a very late photo of her.

The pic comes from this web site;
http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.theatre8.com.au/Copy%2520of%2520HMS%2520Exceter.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.theatre8.com.au/john_spendlove.htm&usg=__OFkeiXb_qPmfQqexRm4dgakRC4Y=&h=800&w=542&sz=115&hl=en&start=101&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=LNh2po6bnZ1IeM:&tbnh=143&tbnw=97&prev=/images%3Fq%3DHMS%2BExeter%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26 client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN%26start%3D90%26um%3D1

TIA for any input

Hi Kevin, have a look at Terry's photo of HMS Clio, in the thanks thread.
Background certainly looks simular.

Hi Kevin,

Thats Colombo I think. So we are talking October 1941.

Best wishes.

PS: Derek, Where is this "thanks" thread?

I think that this is the building with the clock on it....

Hi Dick, agree, did not go ashore there, only stopped off for fuel on the way to Singers in 62.

Thanks Derek.

The picture of Exeter is a great find. It is unlikely to have been taken by Spendlove. I was probably taken from another ship. Where did Taylor find it? Did whoever took the photo perhaps take other pictures of Exeter or of other ships that we are both interested in! Taylor/Theatre 8 is on your side of the planet. Do you think it worth asking him where he got the picture and then following that lead?

Best wishes

Hi Kevin,

An earlier photo, Life Magazine Collection, akin to that of Dick's in post# 5.

Yes I think you are right re Colombo as that 'clock building' seems to match. Well done!

Dick, I will see if I can get hold of Mr Taylor via Theatre 8 and see if any more photos exist. Will keep you posted.
