I have in my possession a lot of books on Naval history, specific aspects of Naval development, at least 60-70, which are not of interest to me directly. I would like to use this forum to see if there is any interest among members to set up a "Trading site" attached to this forum in which we could buy, sell or swap such items as books, memorabilia and so on. There are still plenty of books that i would like to acquire either by buying or swapping, it is always much more pleasurable to do this with friends with a common interest.
Who is for this proposal?
tim
If there is enough interest i will ask KC if he will agree to set it up

I'll go along with that Tim I am always on the lookout for for something out of the ordinary and I have a couple of ex naval types whom I meet up with for the odd pint once a month who are interested, I have just got them to look at this forum although they haven't as yet joined.

I would be very interested if this could be set up. I am interested in buying certain naval books and as well have some that are superfluous to requirements. Be great to add postcards to it as well as I am always interested in buying them!! [If I aint got it -I will buy it!]

If a sell/swap COULD be set up, sure would be of interest. I HAUNT used books stores looking for naval history/ship books. Probably have gotten 40%+ of my modest collection that way.
I do believe that, due to general level of interest, you have more books on these subjects readily availible in the UK than we do over here, at least in smaller metro areas such as I live in. In L.A. I used to find quite a few, but fortunately I don't live there anymore! DFO :)

As an occasional 'poster' to this site i just wanted to add - what a damn fine and sensible idea!
As a memorabilia collector (RN cap tallies) I find that I have to acquire most of my new additions via Ebay these days which can at times be rediculously expensive.
If members are willing to swap / part with their unwanted books / memorabilia for realistic prices then great - who wouldnt be interested? ..... if only I had a few naval books to swap
I to as well. I'm alway's looking for a good Naval reference material. I would be more than willing to swap or sell, buy books.

Hopefully it will come to pass! :)

I think perhaps this thread is going nowhere?
Sorry, been out of commission for a while. Stokes49er, I'll gladly buy "The Ship that Changed the World" off you at that price if no-one else has already snapped your hand off!

I'm always on the lookout for books on R.N. Hospital Ships, or anything to do with R.N. Medics.
If this gets off the ground it would be great, I can usually find something to trade.

Hello ALL, did this site get going - where do I find it ???
I have `umpteen' books naval / army / air force - too many to name here.
Am going to start to `get rid of them' - at my age it is time to pass to another researcher. `Library' includes Navy List's / NSM / many referrence / paper back stories. Some would be `for sale' - some for P&P.
Will try to get a list going - but, with 5000 to do - will take some time.

This is a strange site Dennis. I think you will find that people enjoy talking about what books they have, to sell or swap, or would like, and that's the end of it. Much like a chap who buys a boat and then spends the rest of his life working on it and never actually sets sail.
Cheers...Harry
I'm afraid I'm never going to sell any of my books, but I'm always interested in buying. I only started collecting when I was 20 and am now 23!
I get the impression Sadsac (or should I call you Dennis?) that you have an unbelievable collection. Should you ever draw up a list I'll be very interested in seeing it and donating to the cause.

Hi Baz.
I would like to get my hands on the old volume 1 seamanship manual.
Stupidly I discarded mine when I got issued volume 11.
Problem is I can't see any-one parting with it.

Hi Paddy.
Try Ebay
Derek (Bunts)
Thanks for that Derek,
Yes there is one there but it is 1970's.
With what you said in mind, I also looked at Amazon and there are dozens.
They range from a fiver to an optimistic £100.
Now that I am spoiled for choice I have another problem, my copy was issued to me in 1954 and there seem to be 1937, 1964, and 1970's versions.
Can anyone tell me if there was one between 1937 and 1954.
My grand - kids are now into guides etc and keep hitting me with questions on knots, morse , semaphore etc and I am just a tad rusty.
Just had to make a lanjard after all these years and the turks head was 1.1/2 inches across before I remembered that you had to unlay the chord, then it took me for ever to remember how to do a turks head with three separate strands.
Got there in the end.

Greeting's Paddy,
Have not heard from you for some time now, have you been writing poems?
I cannot help you with that seamanship book, I like you ditched mine some years ago, like the idiot I am.
But I did see one in an old shop opposite the Cutty Sark in London about three years ago, but can't remember what year it related too. But it was priced very high.
My eldest boy bought me one, but not a proper Seamanship Manual, but carried some useful information.
Speak to you soon.

Hello Paddy,
I have a Seaman's Pocket-book issued 1943 approved by the Lords Commissioners Of The Admiralty. I got mine from Amazon as far as I can remember about a fiver, Great little book but i'm afraid no Turks Head, but plenty of other knots and goodies for your young aspiring dabtoes. The last Turks Head I came across was in Dublin claiming to be the oldest pub in Ireland, a great pint and well worth a visit.:)

Hi Baz.
I have written one or two but the poem normally gripps me, rather than the other way round. something sparks the urge and if I grab a pen and go with it then, it writes itself.
I still have my volume 11 from when I passed for killick and I used to mark spots on the edges of the closed pages to quickly find my favorite bits, anything to do with boats, stars, and navigation.
On the Owen during an Indian Ocean commission I slept on a camp bed on deck and I got into Greek mythology of stars in a big way, it helps in getting to know them and gets browny points from the navigation officer if you know more than him.
Those are the bits we miss.
The love of boats also stuck with me and I have built and owned about a dozen over the years, everything from cedar strip canoes to 25 ton narrow boats.

Hi Derek.
I have now taken delivery of two, the first was a dissappointment for which I paid £8.50.
It should act as a warning when buying on ebay to ask more questions.
The book was a 1941 reprint of the 1937 book. The best two pages were selected for the photo with no pics of the cover and the description stated,,, mild bumping to spine, some fading to print on spine and one pull out slightly torn but not affecting plan.
In actual fact the tear was 8" long across the middle of said plan,
The front and back cover boards sported two full height cracks, right through,
All gold print on covers was non existant.
A bunch of pages were hanging out, unattatched,
Several others were stuck in with selotape,
Pages were turned over and folded, full height and most page corners were turned over,
The whole was generally dirty, marked and unloved.
I immediatly bid on a 1951 version and won it for 99p. this book was near perfect.
There is a moral there somewhere when I work it out.
Paddy
