View Full Version : HMS Hood (1924)
Hey Folks, thought id post a few pics of my model of HMS Hood im working on
Im tweaking the 1/350 Trumpeter model which represents the ship in her 1941 fit, to how she appeard in 1924 on the Empire Cruise
been working on an off for a while now, just fitted a KA Wooden Deck
Forgive the pictures, they suck (and yet my day job is a cameraman, scary eh heh)
will post spme pictures of the Bridge and some nicer pictures tomorrow, (or later in the week heh)

Andy:
Looking very neatly done and will be a superb model when done. How are those wooden decks in terms of fit...do they "go around" things as they should, or are you having to do a bit of cut and paste? The real wood certainly is an improvement over any painting I've seen.
Also, are the gun barrels and bags custom items? They look perfect on the model.
Good luck, and steady hands!
Regards,
Hey Don
yeh the decks prettu much fit around all th deck furniture, however since im represending the ship in her 1924 fit, there are a few problems (I.E holes) which i need to plug, but there is a little bit of extra ive managed to steal away from parts you cant see once the ships complete so i should be able to plug them (failing that gonna put arwings up on the deck heh)
The Turrets and Guns are the Lionroar Resin Turrets and Brass Spun Barrels, which are pretty sweet (whats not so sweet is that i still have to paint and fit the covers on the end heh)
Added the Secondary battery and most of the mushroom vents
(Thats just dust on the Hull there, was sanding some bits before taking the pics) also bootstrap looks way shiny there than it actually is
Gonna need to do some planking on the shelterdeck to fill in gaps there the cut out was originally made for the 1941 fit

Hola Dudes
well need to shift this project up pa gear since i got the awesome Trumpeter 1/350 Repulse and Tamiya 1/350 KGV (really eager to get going on Repulse which im gonna have alongside Hood, you can just see her Alongside on that picture up there)
so heres a bit of an update

http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/4776/dsc3569.jpg
l got the 1/350 Steam Pinnace's and 4Inch HA Guns (ordered them on the 23rd, they arrived next morning! so deffo worth a look if ya need any fittings http://www.johnrhaynes.com)
So Boats are pretty much done, just need some finishing up, ive extended the mainmast to match Hood's original fit, although not in the pics ive also added the 5inch range finders at the base of the search light platform.
so next i think we're onto railings and Awnings (eek)

Just looking outstanding in every aspect. I've seen the two John Haynes models aboard the Missouri. His work is to be emulated whenever possible.
Enjoy seeing your progress!
Take care, Andy
thanks Don,
Gah, i hate this part of the build, its all the really little fiddly things which seem to take forever and ya never really notice them till they're all done

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3470/dsc3577.jpg

had a real nightmare with the railings, i lay down the sprus to paint them, but when i went to lift them up they they wouldnt budge, paint had gotten under the spru and dried so when i tried to moe them the railings bent and tore DOH!
however i had a set with Repulse which i poached snce when i get the Repulse PE im sure they will come with railing s anyway
So HOOD is now in the final fitting out, ive fitted most of the railings, the 4inch HA guns are in place (tho they seem a little oversized to be they'll do) the flying off platform is nearly finished, just need a few tweeks to that and likewise all the search lights are fitted
basicly tomorrow my jobs are to finish fitting the railings and awnings and then tackle the Rigging and she'll be done then the delights of building the scene and the joy of joys of resin water
anyhoo, ONWARDS!
Been down with a real nasty case of the stomach flu the last week
but while ive been down decided i wasnt in the right frame of mind for little fiddly bits like I have to do on HOOD, so decided to make a start on her running mate REPULSE

As with Hood im backdating her to how she appeared in 1924 on the world cruise, this is a lot harder tho since i only have s real books for reference (the Ensign #8 and the Raven British Battleships) really could use any refs of her during this period, especially between the funnels and the rear superstructure.
shes only dry fitted just now, waiting for WEM to get Wood-decks back in stock, and mostly using left over HOOD PE where needed.
oh i do need a spare Triple 4Inch turret if anyone has a spare in thier bits box
have done a few more bits on HOOD since my last post, ill take some proper pics in the week and post them
SHE LIVES!!!!

Awnings are done (FINALLY!) and started painting the base, (looks a lot darker in the photos than in real life, ill be pouring clear resin with blue dye) Im rigging Hood at the mo, using very fine fishing wire and gonna start scratch building Station Pier (which i actually got to visit in March when i got to visit the USS Shoup (DDG 82)

Andy,
there's the old girl!!!!! shes still a neat boat!!!!!!!
Nikki
This month ive mostly been working on the Pier, which ive built from matchsticks,
actually been kinda cathartic if im honest lol, pretty happy with how it looks at the moment, but im unsure about how or even if i should paint it?
once i glue it to the base im hoping when i do the resin or acrylic gel pour (havent decided on my water method yet, open to suggestions) it will sit around the base of the legs and hide a few gaps where my sanding/cutting was a little enthusiastic hehe.
also need to build half of the Terminal building to sit on the pier, and possibly cut train tracks, i havent decided if im gonna bother with that as yet
anyway still pressing onwards.

I recently saw a TV advert about a magazine which you can purchase in 140 weekly parts, with each weekly part containing a part of HMS Hood at 1:200 scale, which you assemble into the scale model.
Just read in today's Sun newspaper that it would cost you £830 to buy all of the magazines to build the model:eek:
Doesn't look a patch on Andy's either.

ive seen that advert , whilst its a lot to pay , at nearly £6 a week its probably affordable, but the idea that gets me is 140 weeks , that's nearly 3 years waiting to finish it .

Hi Andy3E
There is a photo on the ships photo request thread of the control tower section of Hood that I posted ages ago, it may be of some help.

Nice model! I have to say though that while I love the planked deck, the cut openings through which fittings arise is not for me. I'd have wanted a full deck and to have fixed to fittings atop.
Did I see 3, 50ft steaam launches painted blue? I thought a capital ship had 2 and an admirals barge ... the latter being the blue craft?
But I loved the awning.. very neat!
