Hello all,
Just getting started with this site. In the past several years I have been doing a great deal of research on the former East German Navy, the Volksmarine. Are there any veterans of that service who post in this forum?
My German is pretty basic, by I would like to hear from any of them in English or German, should they be interested.

All the best,

Kevin

The VOLKSMARINE was a tippical comunist navy , without big ships and with a lot of coastal defense ships :fast atack, torpedoboats ,minelayers and minesweepers . I was a child (10-11 years old) and I asked my father who was visiting DDR to bring from Democrat Germany a model of a military ship . After 20 stores he find a 30 cm long model of a HUCHUAN fast attackcraft with underwater wings and I was in the seven sky . As I know HUCHUAN class ( chinese built coppying soviet fast atackcraft ) were verry good representeted in DDR Navy .
Comunist navyes doesn't have quallity but quantity unfortunally !
Pics of HUCHUAN you can see in Romanian Navy thread.

I believe that upon re-unification of Germany, most of the ships in the former DDR Navy were found to be in very poor condition,They were either soon scrapped or given to other Baltic Navies. Regards Steve.

I don't think that was as bad. Rather a case of different design, different tasks, etc.
Practically all DDR Navy ships were sold to Indonesia, apart from very few boats that went to other navies.
A small number of auxiliaries were retained by German Navy.

i did a few partnership for peace exercises in the baltic and a couple of the recently independent baltic states had been donated ex ddr vessels. Although later they became the recipients of more modern german, british and dutch ships
