just in case I'll make a start

AS I was being jostled around the pictures may not be perfect ...and you were not allowed to go behind any barriers to frame the subject better

Can you name any of these types gents ?

Whilst I am only average at this hobby I do love detail and some of these were excellent :)

MORE! Always like to see models. they often help us plan our next projects and certainly show the standards to be met! Nice photos, jostled or not.

Thanks, Ivor.

Ivor,
Thankyou for sharing your pictures and I must agree with the others, even with the jostling, your photos have come out exceptionally well. (Just between you and me ;), I reckon they're heaps better than the exhibition site pics!)

The standard of the models is superb...what a lot of time and dedication these people must put in to making them so detailed.

I had a little search on the net and found out some more details of the show, for any other members who would like to view it. Looks like it's only on for 3 days....and Sunday is the last day.

Thank you ladies, for your very kind comments

I have already stated that I am an average model builder ,but I love to see the details that these people put in ,,,,and the research .....mind blowing
I think the only reason mine passes muster .....from a distance....... I would add ...........is the help I had from members on this Forum ....even before I knew we had a modeling thread

I saw some beautiful Models at the show ....pristine examples of effort and love of the skills evolving ....but look at the first three off these...and then the forth one........ this looks so life like and real you want to start fund raising to help pay for restoration work......If you can zoom in please do so ......look at the spare D bolts on the winch in the second picture....Detail ..Detail.. Detail ..give me the first boat anytime it looks real and you are waiting for the disheveled crew to emerge.....or is it just me :(

Definitely the best 'weathering' on a model I have seen, there is so much , but it still does'nt look over done, which is so easy to do.

Great stuff Ivor keep it up.

Thank you Jim

Well thats reassuring anyway ....I was beginning to think it was only me that recognised this kind of effort and attention

Kind Regards ivor

p.s. you must tell me how to do that Jim......properly as I now its various washes but its the method that fox's me

Ivor, thanks for posting these, all brilliant. The detail on the one you pointed out is truly amazing, obviously the modeller had some intimate knowledge of this boat or had advice from someone who did.

Like most here I have always fancied having a go at one myself but not sure if my talents stretch that far.

Keep them coming Ivor, much appreciated the effort you've gone to.

Alan have a go mate, remember It is for you, and if it pleases some one else thats a bonus.

Ivor all I can say is look at as many examples as you can and experiment, also try the internet , I seem to remember seeing some thing on 'utube', I think it was on A/C though. By the way there is quite a lot of 'How To' on there.

Like Ivor I am an average builder and the ruling in our club is "Advise if it is constructive but don't criticise the builder - if it looks good to him and performs on the water he must have got satisfaction in the build".

I would recommend it to any senior "boy" - it keeps the brain ticking and the hand steady.

Keep building boys - Our Model Navy is bigger than Gordon Brown's.

Many thanks to you Alan, Jim ,Davep, Daveh.....and also your words of wisdom Dave

The following were apart from anything else comparing different skills
just my opinion ...............
1/ Novalty but many hours work on the laminations of the hull
2/ again detail but from a differant angle
3/ For my dear Friend Charles [cgret]
4/about my current level on weathering
5/ look at the rigging works .....brilliant

Hope you enjoy these also

Every one a beauty and a credit to the builders.

We've got a guy in our club, ex pattern maker in the Dockyard and when he builds, what a finish, he recently built the Great Eastern and Brunel himself didn't do better.

Hats off to all who build and share their efforts.

Ok moving on here are some other items of interest which were on show

Theses may be of interest to some ...but the ink like lake that is our club lake in Histon Cambridge would not encourage me to lose that amount of kit
I tried to find a mirror class dingy model in there and after trying in Zero viz for 2 hours by fingertip search in 5m of water ...gave up

I'll stick to surface War Ship's

Great pictures of the models Ivor. I especially love the detail and weathering of the boats in post #10. What a labour of love....you can just about..smell the rope, rusty iron, wood, seawater and oil of those boats. (Actually, seriously, do the model builders add the "boaty" smells as well??? as it would add to the realism. ) They could easily add a bit of fisholene to the fishing boat.

Sorry for my absence here gang been away to a different planet but back for a little while now [distracted by a Wren]

OK size is important to some .....but take a look at this ex matelot and his model made to raise money for charity ....an awful lot of time and effort there ...dont you think

Start a thread in Royal navy ships and ask Terry or Batstiger or Alan if they can help you with any pictures as I am sure they will have some if any one has

I think it's supposed to be a Severn class as that's what it most closely resembles.

Unless someone knows something else???

i think that you are right , the Trent class is very similar but doesn't have an inflatable on the back as this one does , not an expert by the way , just been to the RNLI web site

Ivor,

Again, you have out done yourself! I'm VERY impressed with the photography and could not get enough of the your photo's. Your weathering is excellent only to be surpassed by your skill in Modeling!

I'd serve with you any day, on any sea!!!!

Well Charles ,

I am very flattered by your comments , though not sure that I deserve them ,
and If I were "AT SEA" as I sometimes feel I am , I could not readily think of anyone I would rather have with me ..............the list would be short but most of them would be from this Forum I hasten to add

Your Sterling help has always been thoroughly appreciated by me and totally amazed at where you have found it .........perhaps better not to ask

Kind Regards to you and yours from Blighty

I'm always amazed at the skills of those who model at this level. I have never attended a show like this but I'm guessing they had different categories for models built from scratch, those built from kits and those that are in between?
I don't have the skills to build from scratch but when my last 'little one' goes to university I would love to try a resin kit! An old Battleship,of course! In my basement I have a Tamiya 1/350 kit of H.M.S. King George V that I've had for over 10 years.....waiting for inspiriation,an airbrush and some photo-etched brass fittings!

Looking back at Ivor's pictures the first two stand out for me.I think that all three Cunard liners are in the same scale!! Wow! In the second pic that looks like Dreadnought or one of her sisters, complete with scale crew on deck! THAT made me drool with envy!:D

Hi shipmates,

I have only just joined the forum and so I saw these posts for the first time today.

The lifeboat is the RNLB Elizabeth Ann, an Arun Class vessel which was stationed at Falmouth before her sale, in 2001, to the Royal Coastal Patrol in New South Wales, Australia. She was built by Halmatics in Havant.

Cheers,

JC

I should have said that the first lifeboat, also Arun class, is the RNLB The Queen Mother, stationed at Longhope in the Orkneys. whoops!

Brilliant model of my old ship Fife, have looked at doing a model such as that myself but kits cost upwards of £700, and I'm not sure I would have the necessary skills to do it.....so I'm very envious of you for producing such a model.

Thanks a million for posting the photo of her, she was my favourite ship.

This is what started it all off, the angle makes it hard to compare to real pics, unless of course you are a navy person!! All i could do was things like count the port holes!!

sonofdave
27-02-2010, 23:57
Of course, the more i looked at HMS Pincher, the more i found different in pics. For example, the pic in my first post, which is a scan of an actual postcard my dad has, shows no '4' on the funnel. I've sort of become hooked on noticing things different about Algerine class at differnet stages of their lives!!!!

Hello Big Al, those pics work fine

28-02-2010, 00:05
I noticed how on the pic of the model 'out of water', which is the actual pic on the model shops website and the only one i was able to find advertising the actual model, has M443 in small yet whoever built the model that is in the water did the M443 in a better representation of the real thing.

Hi Sonofdave,

Picked up the cross reference and had a look at the pic of the model, it looks a really fine model. Congratulations. I don't know if you have a copy of the photo when we were in the Humber approaching Goole for Navy Week so I have attached it. It may give you some additional detail that you require.

I served in Pincher from May 54 to January 56 so I probably met your dad but names are a bit hazy now-a-days. Give him my regards. One thing I can't see on the model is the dint in the seamen's heads on the port side where Rattlesnake bumped into us. Perhaps that is taking realism too far.
