My father served on the repair ship HMS Assistance in 1945. He went to the States to help commission the Liberty Ship supplied to the RN under the lend lease agreement. She was built in Bethlehems yard and my father went with her to the far east as part of Task Force 57 and finished the war in Manus. His return trip to the UK meant leaving the Assistance in Singapore and making the final leg in a similar ship, HMS Portland Bill.
If anybody has or knows where I can find a crew list for either of these ships for the relevant periods, I would be grateful to hear from you.

My Father Lt. John Roger Bradbury (94 Years old) was Chief Engineer on HMS Assistance during the latter part of WW2. As a very young baby I was taken on board to be introduced to my father for the first time. Any contacts or information would be much appreciated.

I received your pm.... thank you.
What a shame...after years of searching for another Assistance crewmember it seems I have found one but just too late......my father passed away last April. He would have been overjoyed at the chance to possibly swap memories of time on the ship.
However, if there is anything you think I might be able to help you with please don't hesitate to ask. In the meantime... I posted some photos of my Dad and other unknown crewmembers here if you are interested.....

I do know that the Captain during my fathers time on the ship was called ...Young.

Thanks John. I get the impression that Dad enjoyed his time on HMS Assistance.
He met Charlie Chaplin and President Roosevelt's son. I'll show him your photos and see if they bring back any memories. What is your father's Christian name?
I'll see what I can do to clean up your photos. No promises when I'm afraid.

I appreciate your attempting to clean up my Dads' photos. His Christian name was Robert but he was usually called Bob or sometimes Bobby. He had a friend on the ship that came from his home town of Hebburn called 'Paddy' Kenny.

I have just found this site, but wished that I knew about it years ago as my father has just past away and would have loved to try reunite my father with his fellow shipmates on HMS Assistance. My father was Petty Officer Norman Ritchie and told me about his time on HMS Assistance and the time spent in Sydney and Singapore. Would love to learn more information on crew and the history of my dads last ship
