Hey All
I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding the operations to raise the Graf Spee from Montevideo?
Seen a couple of programs which showed them bringing up a 5 inch gun and the rangefinder but everything gone quiet since then.
As i understand it, she is a hazard to navigation so has to be remove (i can understand that, esp give the size of many container ships these days) but the plan is to raise and restore the entire wreck? but this seems absolutely farcical to me given the state she must be in, never mind the nearly 70 years under water, but she burned for about a week and suffered the collapse of her Funnel and after superstructure similar to the Arizona.
Surly they would have to replace so much of her structure she would no longer be 'Graf Spee' but a modern copy?
A cursory glance over the interwebs tells me that all salvage operations in Uruguay have been stopped (presumably to review how the money is being spent) but she's going to remain a navigational hazard until something is done about it.
Just wondering if anyone had anymore info or had an opinion they'd like to share?
cheers
