Hello guys,

I wonder if anyone could help me find a book called 'The Humpty Book of Ships' (I think that's how you spell it!) for my Dad. He served on many submarines and ships in the Royal Navy many years ago and would dearly love to get hold of this book to bring back some nice memories.

Thanks!

Lee.

Welcome to the forum Lee.

I have never heard of this book, however I do remember a book that I used to own many years ago called:

THE DUMPY BOOK OF SHIPS
by Carpenter, R, & R.V.P Blackman.

Maybe it was this one you were thinking of??

The Dumpy Book of Ships.Still have my copy ssomewhere from 1957, though cover missing and in poor shape. Has good general info and some good line drawings. Full of notes and additions I made when 12 years old. It always took position beside my old copies of "The Modern World Book of Ships" and "The Wonder Book of the Navy".

Cheers
Bruce

Yes certainly brings back good memories.

I seem to think that I also had a "matching" Dumpy book of both Aircraft and Cars?

Lee you need to get Humpty-Dumpty clean out of your thinking as it is [the] DUMPY book - not Dumpty!

If you click on this link below you will see there are some used copes for sale from only £5 each which seems pretty reasonable to me if they are in good condition.

Here I am, totally bored, so decide to read through some old threads, and I come across Dumpy books. No it can't be true. I must have failing eyesight or perhaps suffering from one of those 'seniors moments'. OK I'll read the thread again. Yep. it does say DUMPY BOOKS.

Now guys I have to be honest. Prior to this thread I would have been embarassed to admit I knew what a "Dumpy book" was, let alone own up to having one. Well 3 actually.

I can still remember as a lad in the late 1950's getting these from Dymocks bookshop in Pitt St, Sydney. But now they are like their owner - showing their age and a bit worse for wear:)

Perhaps the photo will bring back memories for some.

Anyone else for the "Dumpy book fan club":)

I agree Ash - for their time they were great little books!
