Hi,I am a new user and looking for information on my wife,s great grandfather who was a master of arms and served on HMS Gibraltar 5th March 1901 to 17th June 1904,HMS Vivid from 18th June 1904 to 1st November 1904,HMS Defiance 2nd November 1904 to19th March1906,HMS Essex from20th March 1906 to 30th November 1906 and HMS Vivid 1st December1906 to 8th February 1907 when he transferred to the naval reserve. This information was taken from his naval record but does not tie in with family information from 1901 to 1907 which mentions that he was attached to the naval prison in Bodmin Cornwall.
Any information would be most welcome
His full name was John Robert Linington born 2nd February 1864

Hello Musicman, welcome to the forum.
I wish you luck with your search but in the meantime here are a couple of pictures for you:-

HMS Gibraltar with a bit of history.
HMS Essex.
HMS Essex.
HMS Defiance which was a torpedo and mine training school.
HMS Vivid was Royal naval barracks Devonport before being named HMS Drake. Last but not least a fine colour picture of Bodmin Jail which is supposedly haunted!

Hi Bob
Many thanks for the photos,in fact I live in Bodmin, but the picture of the prison is one of the best I have ever seen.My wife's late uncle researched all the family history about John Robert Linington and we are convinced he was based in Bodmin at the naval section of the prison and lived in the town,he met his wife there and was married there, but a local researcher who is writing a history of the prison didn,t have any information on naval warders,we sent him our uncles information and he then obtained his naval records which is what I posted on the Forum site.R.J.Linington is supposed to have escorted the next to last person to be hanged there to the gallows,a Italian merchant seaman.
