FEARLESS has postponed her last journey to the scrapyards of Belgium until Monday or Tuesday of next week (3rd or 4th)
She was due to leave Portsmouth yesterday but due to the bad weather then and today, she went nowhere.
She's currently alngside the North West Wall in the dockyard.
Her sale value was £200,000 and she's expected to make around £1.2 million from scrap.
Attached is a pic of her yesterday alongside.
Hiya Rik
I hope the weather is a bit better, I got soaked waiting for her.
I take it all is lost now. Wasn't she going to be a nightclub or training ship or something? Either way another lost Falkland Memorial.
Any idea what is happening to Intrepid?

Hi Alan,
no idea regarding Intrepid. Sorry.
Another pic of Fearless.

Well it's a sad sight - my father was a Colour Sgt in the RM and was on the Fearless in the 60's. (Sadly he passed away 6 years ago today).
I have the original HMS Fearless book and a nice B/W photo of her.
But at least the Navy got their monies worth from both her and the Intrepid.
I was watching a re-run of the Falklands documentary the other night and recognised the Intrepid instantly.

Took this photo last year about 5 minutes walk from my house. It's a bit sad to see great ships end their working life in this way and maybe one at least could have been saved and used as a memorial to those who served their country,

I don't know about you guys but I think there is nothing worse than seeing a warship that has been a home to so many people in good and bad times being slowly broken up
One is always left with photographs and memories but that isn't much consolation when all ones pals are scattered over the four corners of the earth.
Poor old Fearless!

Out for a meal tonight at our local, the Jolly Roger and to my horror, noticed an empty space on the water, once occupied by Intrepid. Looked around and found her moored at the Dockyard. Is this the end?

Bob
P.S. Poor quality photo's from a mobile. Will go down tomorrow to take more. A sad day.
P.S. My 60th birthday tomorrow
Wishing you a very Happy 60th Birthday Bob; enjoy your day ! :)....and thanks for all your great photos.

Had no option but to take a days holiday today to record the final moments of HMS Intrepid.
Very sad. Time of departure, 10.30, delayed until 1530, delayed again until 1700 hrs. Luckily in touch with the Harbour Master via the Defence Correspondent of the News, Matt Jackson, who updated us to ensure we did not miss the opportunity to record her departure.
Her journey down the harbour under tow was very slow and reminiscent of a funeral, which in a way it was. Took over a hundred photo's which I hope will please everyone. These were taken from two different cameras and I will download this batch first although camera two does have images mixed in with these.
The saddest part of the day occurred on my way home when two ex crew members arrived out of breath to discover they had missed her departure. They were both in tears as they had served on her in the Falklands War. I will ensure they will get all the photo's I took today plus a framed copy of the best shot and a copy of a video that was taken by a friend, they deserve it,

Thank you Terry and Rik. This was a very doubtfull enterprise as the reply from the Queen's Harbour Master, who was kind enough to help me will show you:
Bob,
The latest plan that we are working on is for INTREPID to depart on Friday 12 September, either at 1030 or 1530. Note that this is only a plan and the eventual departure date and time will very much depend on the forecast weather conditions for the English Channel and Irish Sea. Her departure time will appear on our Daily Movements, which we post on our website about midday each day. The movements for Saturday, Sunday & Monday are issued on Friday lunchtime, so if it is delayed until the weekend and there is a subsequent change, it will not show up there.
Regards.

Well done Bob for taking the time and trouble in obtaining all these photographs. What a sad country we have become in not respecting our naval heritage. The story of the demise of these two famous ships, one of which should have been preserved somewhere in the UK, together with the HMS Victory rumours and the uncertain fate of that great ship.
I nostalgically think back to the Home and Mediterranean Fleets I knew as a young sailor in the 50's and really , it's enough to make one weep.
Thanks again for the photos.

"Sisters in Arms" Here is a photograph of FEARLESS and MV ELK (NP1020) on the way to the Falkland Islands 'conflict' in 82.
From memory (I was in ELK at the time) - This must have been in the area of Ascension Island - probably when we all weighed anchor and put to sea in a hurry because of a submarine scare. The occassion is testing ELKs RAS points - note the Eager Beaver tractor/fork lift being used to haul the load.
Note also that the upper deck sides were still being cut away by the 'Sappers' so that we could take on Helicopters. Also the two manual Bofors guns on the fore deck - which were left over from the LSL allocation we brought with us! You can guess what specialisation the SNO was!

Dave, this is a difficult badge to find, Hms Fearless of ww1 was an 'active class' scout cruiser, although there is now a badge for 'Fearless' the badge does not relate to this ship, the badge was passed as an official pattern in 1933 for the Destroyer Hms Fearless.
There maybe an unofficial badge as many ships had them around that time, perhaps someone will be able to help with that.
There are several photo's of Fearless on our sister site and a photo of the crew, you can purchase copies of them....here's a link to the page.

Good luck with your search, please ask if you require any further help.

David,
My Grandfather as well was a Leading Stoker on HMS Fearless thoughout the whole of WW1, he did over 20 years in total in the Royal Navy. Was your Grandfather on it for all of the war. The main battles it was involved in were Heligoland Bight 1st August 1914, Jutland 31 May 1916 and was also heavy involved in the Isle of May disaster, when 104 Royal Navy submariners were killed after collisions with Royal Navy surface ships. I can give you more information and book titles if you want them.

David Collins

BigLes, If you read the post again I had already explained that the badge for Hms Fearless was issued in 1933 for the DESTROYER Fearless, ships badges officially didn't come into being until 1919 After ww1 had finished.
The badge you have displayed is the one I was referring to, it is in the shield-shape for destroyers, it was passed on 30th June 1933 as can be clearly seen on your photo, not 1935 as you state in your post. The badge for the last Fearless was the same design but in the Round-shape. Sorry to have to correct you but no point giving people the wrong information.
Regards
Alan
collind, my grandfather Mark Alfred Markley also was a stoker from july 1914 - sept 1918 then left the royal navy. would love any other information you could give me thank you

Tom,
could I respectfully draw your attention to the dates on your subject title?
Are you using these dates as a guide to limitations on thread content (say, for instance, the first two commissions) or could there be a misprint.
I only ask because my son was kept safe in her during the Falklands Conflict in 1982.

Sandy,
The books that I posted only covered the commisions upto 1972, then I believe she was put in mothballs until the Faulklands started. I may be wrong about these dates. I served on the Fearless whilst she was being built in Belfast then I served on her 1st commision in the Far East. I flew home from the Persian Gulf, time expired, while the Fearless was involved with the withdrawel from Aden, end of 1967.
While the Fearless was being built Winston Churchill died & she was to be named after Winston Churchill, but I beleive a Traing ship beat us to it, so we kept the name of Fearless.
