I wonder if anyone could tell me what medal belongs with this ribbon
The owner has a WW1 victory medal and served in the RN 1916 to 1921

i can only find two medals that the ribbon might belong to

1) the imperial service medal - generally given to civil service types for long service ie: 25 years

2) the distinguished conduct medal (the blue is darker than the ISM) given to warrant officers and non commissioned officers

hope that helps

Some observations:

The Distinguished Conduct Medal is primarily an Army award - ie given for bravery on land (as opposed to the Distinguished Service Medal which is more a Naval award for bravery at sea). So if he were serving in the RN, unless he was with a Royal Naval Division, he is unlikely to have been awarded the DCM.

The Imperial Service Medal was awarded for at least 25 years service in the Civil Service (which used to include the Post Office). The combination of WWI medals with the ISM is not uncommon as many men left the services and then became postmen or civil servants.

The ribbon for the ISM is wider (1.5 inches) than the DCM (1.25 inches)

A photo of an ISM is attached - this particular recipient was a Ropemaker in Chatham Dockyard.

By the way all ISMs are listed in the London Gazette. I can probably find the entry for you provided his full name is not too common (ie John Smith, George Williams etc).

Thankyou for this
His name was Ernest Arthur Legg and he was at Priddy's hard armaments depot for 30 years, retiring in 1965

Here is the extract from the London Gazette with the heading etc from the previous page which confirms it is the ISM.
