Some time ago I started to research the order of flags used in the USN when dressing ship on ceremonial occasions. I contacted the USN Historical Center in Washington but they said they had no records at all of flag patterns ever being issued.

I have copy of the current pattern. My research shows that there was a common pattern to the flags as far back as 1920 - 1930 so there must have been instuctions issued as to what order the flags should be placed on the line.

Are there any old USN "bunting tossers" amongst us who could shed some light on this for me?

Cheers

Bruce,

Try this site to start with,

This deals with the old manuals.

Hi Charles,

There certainly is some info on that site. I did find a few articles on dressing ship but it appears that the actual patterns may be in the Navy Signal Book. I could not find a copy of this for any period on the site. I'll keep looking.

I will keep a sharp eye out. There are few ships associations on the navsource site, they maybe able to give a hint or direction you may need.
