#2 the ISE has now been launched..............
Japan's second "Hyuga Class" helicopter-carrying destroyer was launched Friday at IHI Marine United Inc's shipyard in Yokohama.
At a ceremony held at the shipyard, Parliamentary Secretary for Defense Nobuo Kishi, on behalf of Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, gave the official name of "Ise" to the nation's largest destroyer.
The 197-meter long, 13,950-ton Ise can carry up to 11 helicopters aboard by using the deck and the hanger deck beneath it.
Are Fuso and Yamashiro next???...........DFO ;)

This ship is quite a "destroyer". Every time I see this vessel and her designation I think of how the RN INVINCIBLE class were originally to be designated "through deck cruisers", largely for political reasons. As I recall (this was a long time ago) after the British government cancelled the 2 CVA 01 class carriers the term "aircraft carrier" became anathama. So what was termed a "cruiser" emerged as something that bore an incredible resemblence to an "aircraft carrier". And as politcal winds shifted, these former "through deck cruisers" became "support carriers" with their hull numbers prefaced with the old familiar "R". Magic!
I wonder if these Japanese "destroyers" will at some point magically "metamorphise", (well in deference to the Japanese constitution
written by incredibly short sighted US Army officers, I will simply say) into "something else".
What ever happened to the old saying, "if it looks like a duck....".

Their next class of DDH (uh-huh) is growing to, IIRC, 19,500 tons. Interesting as the IJN's fleet carrier Soryu of WW 2 was 18,800 tons........DFO ;)

Curiously, these ships are named like battleships of yester-year.

Indeed they are; hence my previous question about naming next two Fuso and Yamashiro??? DFO :D

Also curious how they chose the names of battleships that had been converted to hybrid carriers

Yes, and the IJN had considered doing the same to Fuso and Yamashiro, but for various reasons did not waste the effort; primarily from what I have read, because they did not have the resources availible! DFO ;)
