Could someone please tell me if and when US Ships started to carry crests or Patches.
My search is on for WW2 DD & DE's and to find if they had Ships crests or similar during this period.
many thanks

Many Thanks Charles,
Most of what i have found is from 1946 though,
Do you think they had them during WW2?

Your Welcome,
If you go to navsource.org you find that some had patches or crest for there ships. Accordingly OPNAVINST 5030.2B of 1946 indicates the Navy did endorse the use of the same but up until the time that the instruction came out to fleet the use of ships crest and patches in the US Navy was spratic at best.

I'm sorry here is the link:

http://www.navsource.org/

I would look in the Destroyer section and there you find some ships had them and other's did not.

According to Doug Siegfried CDR USN (ret) semi official insignia started to appear with the establishment of the Bureau of Aeronautics in 1921. By the beginning of WW11 all Navy squadrons most Naval and reserve air stations and carriers had distinctive insignias. They then spread to the rest of the fleet. In 1943 the Navy told the squadrons to stop using Donald Duck so often for proposed insignias. The info comes from a book on US Navy patches by Michael L.Roberts, my copy covers Submarines but there are other volumes on different types of vessels. Hope this helps
