Hi,

I'm having a similar problem with finding specific info on my Grandad who also served on the HMS Renown.

After contacting the veterans association I was given the following info;

It may be helpful if I explain that, prior to 1972 all Royal Navy (RN) personnel were given their service record when they were discharged. For pension purposes the RN retained pay details. Therefore the only information held on RN personnel who served prior to 1972 is their Service details (number, rank, name etc) and a list of dates and ships/shore bases.

May I suggest you contact Naval Personnel Records or one of the following organisations enclosing as much detail as possible. They may be able to assist you further with your enquiries. Information is free of charge to former service personnel and their widows/widowers. A charge of £30 (Sterling) is made for family interest enquiries relating to deceased former service personnel.

For applications from Current/former RN service personnel please complete the attached/enclosed Subject Access Request (SAR) form and send it to Naval Personnel Records at the address below.

Alternatively, for applications from Family Members and Other Authorised Individuals please complete the attached/enclosed Certificate of Kinship form and send it to:

Naval Personnel Records:
Disclosure Cell
Room 48
West Battery
Whale Island
Portsmouth
Hampshire
PO2 8DX
Telephone: +44 (0) 2392 628671

Hope this helps you in your search.
