My grandfather William Henry Watts J 5136 Served on HMS Endymion between 24th Sept 1910 and 12th Jan 1912.
I am looking for any information on Endymion's service record and crew between the above dates
Hi Terry,
Endymion was completed 26/5/1894, served in the channel 1894-95, 'particular service' (whatever that was!) 1896-97 then held at Chatham 1897-99 before being sent to the China station 1899-1902. She was then refitted by Harland & wolff 1902-03 before going back to the channel in 1904. She was then used as a tender to HMS Wildfire as a gunnery training ship at Sheerness from 1905-1912 and then attached to the 3rd fleet (low cat reserve) 1912-13. She then became the flagship of the training squadron operating out of Queenstown in 1913-14. On the outbreak of the war she was assigned to the Northern Patrol as part of the 10th cruiser squadron, where she came close to being sunk on 15th Oct 1914 when she was part of a 6 ship patrol which was sighted by Otto Weddigen in U9 (sinker of Hogue, Aboukir & Cressy). Endymion stopped dead in the water to conduct a boat transfer with HMS Hawke. Endymion got underway but at 1030 Hawke was torpedoed & sank rapidly. 524 men were lost. Shortly after this the cruisers were replaced by converted liners and Endymion was rebuilt with huge bulges down her sides in 1915 before being sent to the dardanelles in 1915-16. She remained in the Med and Aegean until 1918 when she returned to the Nore to pay off in 1919. She was sold for scrap to Evans, Cardiff in 1920
