Whilst reading a thread about unloading munitions a thought occurred to me that you may know the answer to:-
When unloading large heavy objects from the ships hold using its own "derricks"
what in the worst case scenario stops the ship from turning over ?
Is it a case of compensating by pumping ballast around the Ship to off set the load
Me thinks that to get the ship to roll over you would need to be hoisting something over the side that weighed maybe a quater of the ships mass.
The limit was probably more dependant on the spar, derrrick, cordage or wire strength.

Hello Ivorthediver. Back in about 1989-90 a mobile crane toppled over on fountain lake jetty in Portsmouth. People say that civil servants don't move very fast, well we did that day ! Kevin.

"although the ground was know doubt a bit slippery under foot"
That's why, in an emergency you hear "Abandon ship. Stokers with oily steaming boots stand fast and listen for further pipes"

ye gods again Dave... don't ITD know anyfink?:D with all the posts we've exchanged he still doesn't get it !!!! oily's have to be last off cause they have to open the valves with their treasured w/spannahs to ensure there is no hazard to shipping when the worst happens.
With regard to slippy (greessee) steamin bootz ... that makes them best placed for the ultimate egress, just like yer aktual firefighters, but down yer seaboat sheets n things. What do they want their own private slipway:rolleyes::p

Not if I've got anything to do with it....I expect my barge to be there to assist my Engineering staff aboard and issue each one with a bottle of rum and a change of clothing , and a bacon sarny [brown sauce optional]

Come on ladies - can we keep this sort of cheerful banter to the stokers thread where those of a nervous disposition will know what awaits them!!;)
Stokers, or usually leading stokers, were often responsible for aiding the balance of the ship..When they were in charge of the Evaporators they had to take care where they pumped the water into the tanks which kept the ship on an even keel. Also the oil tanks were on both the port and starboard sides and you couldnt take it all from one side. If you did, you would find that the Wardroom pink gins would slide across the table...and that would never do! So Stokers had more to worry about than many think? Cheers,Stan

Never Doubted it for a minute Stan......Its just that the cloned, after shave fume enhanced, sub species who second as gull perches, believe their own bilge so much that they are blind to us god fearing, diligent ,craftsman in Engineering .
