My uncle Petty Officer Thomas Bassett was serving on HMS Sterling when he was drowned on 29 April 1927. It would appear that his death was in suspicious circumstances. Can anyone throw any light on this mystery. His Death certificate shows Cause of Death as 'Suffocation due to drowning accelerated by Self inflicted wound'. I can be contacted at dabardevon@hotmail.co.uk. Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you.

STERLING was an 'S' class destroyer completed in 1919. I believe she was originally based at Chatham for the local Nore Flotilla; in reserve 1922 - 25; with the 8th Destroyer Flotilla 1926 - 32; initially based at Rosyth then deployed to the China station in 1927, where she remained until she came home to pay off in 1932, when she was sold for scrap.

'Crew lists' do no exist.
