Hello

Can anyone tell me which Royal Navy ships were involved in the 1922 Chanak Crisis please?

I am trying to work out the connection between the crisis and the 3rd and Atlantic Flotillas as I research the history of Engineering Rear Admiral Harold Baker Sears. His obit in the Times notes "In the Chanak operations of 1922-23 he was Engineering Commander (D) 3rd and Atlantic Flotillas." He appears to have been on HMS Campbell at this time.

His service papers make no particular mention of this incident although it seems Campbell went to the Mediterranean in July 1923.

If anyone could help I would be grateful. Thanks

Tony

The First DF April 1922-Feb 1923 was

WALLACE (Capt D)
VANCOUVER
VELOX
VERSATILE
VORTIGERN
WALKER
WARWICK
WATCHMAN
WHIRLWIND

Third DF was

CAMPBELL (Capt D )
VERITY
VETERAN
WANDERER
WILD SWAN
WISHART
WITHERINGTON
WIVERN
WOLVERINE

Destroyers from Malta would probably have been from the Seventh DF

Thanks everyone

Quick question - what does the D mean please? In Harolds papers he is shown as Engineering Commander (D) and you have used a D in the response above.

Where you see "Captain D". This is the senior Officer of a Destroyer flotilla. And he is a four ringed Captain.

He will also have his staff. (Captain D Staff) usually on the ship that he is serving.

Sometimes they will have some staff ashore in offices.

Captain D at Portland when I was on the Undaunted had some offices in Osprey, The shore establishment on Portland.

Captain D Staff would go on board other members of the flotilla and do inspections.

So I am assuming that Engineering Commander(D) would be the senior Engineer in the flotilla
