This is my grandfather George Miller, father of the George R Miller in my previous thread. I found his service record so have a good picture of his life. Six months ago, all that was known was his name and that he died in 1912, we had no idea he was in the Royal Navy.

Just for interest, George signed on as a boy in 1893, his record shows he sailed on some fantastic old ships such as Resolution, Alexandra, Raleigh, Vulcan, and 1904 to 1905 HMS Revenge. Then, on 31 August 1905 was transferred to Excellent, 6 days later the final entry states “Invalided”.

My question concerns the badge on his right arm, I have tried a close-up to see if that helps. I think it must be a trade badge, but which one? To me it looks like a telescope, anyone have a better idea?

I think you will find it is a gunnery badge Keith.

This is the nearest that I can find to it.

Well that would account for him spending so much time on big battleships.
