I would be very grateful if someone more knowledgeable than me could take a few seconds to advise me on the significance of the difference in crests on the CWGC headstones for RN personnel (see pic attached)

i've seen the difference before on a few headstones, i think its just a thing to do with the age of the grave, most fairly recent graves have the top style of anchor on them while older ones have the different style.
unless anyone knows different

This is an excerpt for a letter from Charles ffoulkes.
It looks like there was several designs of anchors.

I visit the battlefields and CWWGs in Europe with my son and have come across the same especially WW1 headstones, I believe that when the head stone gets worn with age the motiff ie:anchor is WW1 style and is up dated to the present style along with a replacement headstone as davep has said, no doubt someone will tell me if I am wrong about this, all the CWWGs that I have seen are well tended and looked after by the locals residents.
