My father-in-law saw the "model" used in the movie RED OCTOBER being towed for the film in the L.A. Harbor area...about 200' long??? DFO :D
Of course the attached shots show the real boats, too, and start to convey the IMMENSE size these boats were.
The first time I saw one was on a bit of film footage of a parade of Russian Navy personnel. There must have been about 200 of them on parade then the camera pulled back and the whole thing was on about half the deck of one of these beasts.
Unfortunately the scans are not that large but should give an indication of size.:):)

Just amazing how so much effort can go into creating weapons to KILL and so little effort into helping one another make the world a better place for all............DFO :(
what always got me was that the displacement of these guys was about the same as a british carrier.

Yes and with twin, side by side hulls, inside an outer skin...one lousy lil MK 48 ADCAP torpedo will be a flea bite! And don't forget daa roooshuunn sauna/pool INSIDE for daa officers! Aaaah, all the luxuries of Mother Russia!
What is there...one left, theoretically operational??? From what I've read certain high ranking SOV Admirals considered them a HUGE waste of roubles?? That's from a book @ Cold War Submarines by N. Polmar and K.J. Moore....good book about these modern day capital ships. DFO :)
I think the tigerfish had enough bang, it had a 750 lb charge but certainly with tough hulls and deep diving they set our torpedo manufacturers and sailors a challenge.
Didn't they store their batteries outside the hull or is that a myth, something else to get through to get at the hull.
Let's put it this way, I wouldn't want to bump into one of those in the depths of the Atlantic......!!

not without an Anti Submarine Warfare group and maybe a couple of Nuclear Depth Bombs.
I would say It might be a hard target to find.

I visited one in early stages of construction at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. I don't know her name. The hull plates were 8" thick with 100% x-rayed welds. The propellers had just been cast and were being set up for machining. Huge!
I hope that was an american vessel and not a Typhoon:D

That's what the UK and French probably thought before the coming together of Vanguard and Le Triomphant(?)!!!
