View Full Version : ROYAL NAVY MEDALS with bars.
I have been watching on tv "DICKINSON,S REAL DEAL" and this couple brought all there family decorations to be sold .
She wanted to go to visit folks in SICILLY.
And to my surprise ,there was one , that had no ribbon to it ,and along the top it had "minesweepers ".
She said " he was on a sweeper that hit a mine ,and they all survived.
Has any one seen one of the same ???
I Found this PICCY on a website, and the amount of decorations ,was about this amount .
It makes you think "what do they think of there family" if the could talk ,what tales they could tell.
My wife is upset that she has not got one of her grandads, some one down the line sold it ,we think.
And getting a replacement is not the same ,he lost his life 2 months just before the end of WW1.

I have heard of a minsweeping medal i may be wrong but i think it was issued to crews of minesweepers who conducted live sweeps etc ,as an example the crews of the Ton Class boats that did the second Suez Canal clearence recieved the minesweeping medal,I was there for the first one in 74 but we didn't, no doubt it's one of those things that if the admiral i/c want another gong for his collection that all then everyone gets one.
Regards
Dave
Hi DAVE
I had never seen one before,it had it written along the bar ,above the medal.
But as i said , there was no ribbon ,to see what it was ,difficult to make out on tv .
I have been trying to find a link in TV CATCH UP . but having no joy yet.

A Naval General Service Medal with a 'MINESWEEPING 1945-51' Clasp would fit the bill.
The NGS medal was awarded for minor actions where there wasn't a specific medal in place. I think there were around 15 different possible clasps for the medal.

The NGS with Malaya clasp would have been awarded to any RN or RM person being in what would be classified as Area of Operations during the Malayan Emergency. That is the combat against Communist Insurgents,I believe between the early50's to 1962.When the emergency was declared over. Steve.

Many thanks Steve - I was out there in a carrier in 1964. Malaya had gone quiet but Indonesia was proving interesting at that time.

Hi Cylla. Your attachment of the photo of all those medals is amazing, they cover Two world wars and more. What the Green one on the end of the Right hand group is,I have no Idea.Perhaps it is a Colonial award of some type. Some one out there will have an idea.Regards Steve.:)

Have just been looking in my medal catalogue and it shows a Malaya Clasp on two NGS's
NGS 1915-62 [George VI] [Red and White Ribbon]
NGS 1915-62 [Elizabeth II] [Red and White Ribbon]
1962 the NGS was replaced by General Service Medal [All Services] and Malaya was replaced with Malay Peninsula.
The MALAYA clasp was for any Naval operations from 1946 until 1962
NGS clasps were issued for:
Palestine 1936-39
Palestine 1945-48
S.E.Asia 1945-46
Yangtze 1949
Minesweeping 1945-51
Malaya
Cyprus
Near East
Arabian Peninsula
Canal Zone
Brunei

Thanks Steve- lucky you. I was out in Borneo but missed the NGSM though I did receive the GSM with Radfan clasp (1964).

The Green Ribboned medals in the photos could be "Efficiency Medals" which have a 32mm Green Ribbon with yellow edges, the medals do look slightly oval which could either be the angle of the photo or just confirmation that they are indeed Efficiency Medals.

Steve, as I said well done you. In those days, after Korea and WWII, not a lot of medals were issued. Is it the GSM (as I knew it) or the CSM (Campaign) as people seem to refer to it now?

Hi Invincible. You are right the GSM seems to be well forgotten these days, with Iraq and Afghanistan having their own campaign medals issued.I can understand it with Iraq that was a War,but Afghanistan is only referred to as a Conflict. So why no GSM and clasp? Cheers Steve.

The Plot Thickens.Steve.:D:D:D
Gents,
I don't think they are naval medals, they are more likely army group or RAF (the two second world war ones),
Left hand group are left to right.
39-45 star ( item 177 medal year book 2007), Africa star (180), defence medal (185), war medal 1939-45 (186), UN Korea medal (197), general service medal 1918-62 (174) up to 18 different bars awarded to Army and RAF for minor campaigns, Efficiency medal (237) a territorial award.
Right hand group, left to right,
39-45 star, France Germany star (184), defence medal, war medal 39-45 and efficiency medal.
A lovely group of medals none the less, to two guys that served across a range of campaigns.

Hi Dave.I agree a wonderful couple of sets. Two guys seem to have gone through the entire war.I wonder if the guy who owned the first set was recalled from reserve for Korea? Did you could the money on the table? I think its £150.There must have been something in there that the dealer thought he could make a killing on,perhaps it was the twoo efficiency Medals? Best wishe Steve.
Hi Steve,
With the efficency medal i would assume that he was possibly called back up for Korea but with out seeing the bars to the GSM it would only be a guess.
I've just read a couple of books about Korea as it was a war i knew little about to my shame, "Mist on the rice fields" by John Shipster who fought in Burma and then Korea and "to the last round" by andrew salmon which i struggled to put down.
if the dealer paid £150 for all three lots he did very, very well. the GSM could be worth between £60-£500 depending on the bar and unit.
Cheers
Dave

Hello All
The two top groups are army groups the last medal of each is the Efficiency medal as issued to the TA. The left hand group including a two clasp GSM and a UN Korea Group is worth a minimum of £250 and probably more, the other group is £150 and the bottom group is a WW1 trio £75 minimum.
Of course this can move upwards depending on units and if the WW1 group is a casualty
If the seller took what was on the table they were a fool but then again if you can't be bothered to do your research to find out what you are selling expect to get ripped off.
On TV is just very public!
Peter
There has been a lot of discussion of bars for the Naval General Service Medal 1915-62 in this thread. I thought I would add a few photos of some of the medals although I haven't got examples of the rarer bars or the recently issued Canal Zone.
Starting with the reverse of the medal (all issues) and the bars:
Persian Gulf 1909-1914
Palestine 1936-39
Palestine 1945-48
Some more bars:
SE Asia 1945-46
Minesweeping 1945-51
Yangtze 1949
Malaya (GVI issue)
And finally the bars:
Malaya Elizabeth II issue
Cyprus
Near East
Arabian Peninsula
Brunei
Note that issues of Arabian Peninsula and Brunei were predominately to Royal Marines. Also a greater proportion of the Malaya EIIR and Cyprus medals were also issued to Royal Marines
Nice set of medals Odin, thanks for posting them.
