View Full Version : Final deck Colour Musashi and Yamato
Hi,
Remember reading somewhere that the crew painted the teek decks a dark colour to prepare for battle which would go against that colour shown on models etc of a tan.
Any comments.
Best regards

Bill,
Here are 2 photo's that may very well indeed comfirm your thoughts.

Note: These are B/W photo's. There is a difference between the foscle deck and the main deck.

Thanks Charles.
If I assume and take the general colour of grey as being the IJN grey of the bow area then whats left is definitely way darker. If the deck is teak then would they have painted things dark grey(?) so it didn't stand out like a sore thumb from above?
Best Regards
Bill
Bill,
I suspect your right on the Dark Gray. At the time of the attack she was at flak speed (28kts) and her wake gave her away, besides her sheer size. Here's another photo of the ship taken from the foscle looking aft towards the bridge area. Note her beam!

Bill,
No offense meant to Dave or this forum, but if you want a definitive answer from the IJN experts I suggest you ask here;

Kevin,
None taken.
I was not aware of that form, Thank You. But also there is another forum www.modelwarship.com. There is a gentlemen at this site who has been researching this very class ship for 5 years. At the time I posted my response he had not been online a for awhile. So if my response is in error than I will be the first to post the correction in my statement.

Charles,
I by no means meant to infer you were in error, as the Yamato's are not my 'area' of interest by any means when it comes to the IJN. More a cruiser and destroyer fan myself. :) But some of the chaps on that IJN forum are serious IJN experts, and I mean EXPERTS, hence my reference to that forum. As a a matter of fact I would not hesitate to say that outside of Japan you won't find a greater knowledge base forum with regards IJN ships than there.
Kevin
Kevin,
I understand. I was just saying I will check the other forum to verify the deck color and correct it if need be. I am NO expect on the ship either. I try to update my knowledge base when new information come to light.
So kevin you rightly pointed out a source for the information. Again harm done.

Bill, Kevin,
Here is what I have found out about the paint colors.
Sept.44 Musashi Painted hull with new paint, Dark Color, possible from captured Royal Navy stockpile that was captured.
18Oct44 Musashi and Yamato, Black paint applied to the decks of both ship's for a night break through of the San Bernardino Straits. Main component of the black paint was soot from Musashi Stack.

Charles
