Russia Captures 10 Pirates Off Somalia
The Russian Navy has captured 10 Somali pirates. The disparity between a Russian nuclear battlecruiser and a pirate skiff is almost comical.

"The nuclear cruiser Pyotr Veliky has detained three small pirate boats," said Igor Dygalo, adding that 10 armed men of Somali citizenship were seized in the operation Thursday.

The pirates had been spotted by the cruiser's helicopter southeast of the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean, the spokesman told AFP.

"It was visually established how weapons were being dumped from the boats into the sea," Dygalo said in a separate statement.

Noteworthy, it suggests the Russians will be taking them to Russia for prosecution. If the weapons have been dumped into the sea, it seems there may not be much evidence to be used by a prosecution...

Which is part of the problem here. On one hand we want to hold people accountable with liberal justice, and on the other hand the Western countries are all looking for countries with a lower standard of guilt to insure successful prosecution. No matter what you do, short of killing the pirates it really does look ugly from a legal perspective. Sad when killing them all is the clean, legal option.

I don't know what the Russian law says, but I have a feeling the helicopters camera will be enough evidence to lock these folks away for many years.

Good for them, enough of letting the sobz go free after! IMhO..........DFO

I saw parts of this reported on the BBC news this morning.

It also said US forces had captured nine pirates the day before.

I do agree that using Peter the Great for capturing skiffs is kind of like hunting rabbits with an elephant gun.

But, then her size may be a real advantage in the number of helicopters she would be able to operate simultaneously. Also her endurance is such that she can stay around for a long, long time.

Anyway, hip hip hooray for the good guys. It is good to hear that the naval forces over there are having success.

This kind of activity in that region and as well around the world has gone on long enough. It's about time the world community stepped up and started doing something about it.

As for the legal standing for Russia to take those back to their court's, that remain's to be seen. Is there a legal presidence in this kind of case?

I surely do not know about any previous legal decisions that would be of assistance here.

In past months, I have read of both Dutch and French naval forces who have simply released captured pirates because there was nothing that they could do with them on any legal basis.

The largest problem here is the country of Somalia itself. Since they have not had a functioning central government since sometime in the early 1990's, it also means there is no judiciary system, courts, police, jails or legal system of any kind to take custody of or prosecute these pirates.

A legal black hole of immense importance to shipping interests world wide.

No, my idea of JUSTICE for those thugs would be, let's say a 7.62mm round thru their "running lights"(USMC term for eyes..)....after a PROPER trial, of course. Shades of the Barbary Coast where we (USMC) had to dispense instant justice; funny...as I recall it WORKED very effectively. Semper Fi! DFO :D
