Whats the Commando Carrier in the background in picture ID285?
Good set of Pics by the way.
I think it's BULWARK Not 100% sure will check it out.
Regards
Dave
Albion had type 965 atop her mast I believe, Bulwark didn't.
Hope this helps
Alan
Alan ,
I think your right Re the 965 radar so it looks like being BULWARK after all

Dave
A couple more pix of CARYSFORT
Dave
And me Dave :p
I remember the Bulwark lying up the trot in Pompey just rusting away :( till they took her away. Wasn't she earmarked once to be converted into a crane ship for the oil rigs? Uplifting experience, I suppose :o
Alan
Alan,
That's quite possible although Iv'e never heard that before ,you generally hear all sorts of rumours about whats going to happen to ships when they are laid up for a long time ,Take FEARLESS and INTREPID for example there has been more stories about whats happening to them than anything else for the past few years. I even heard one buzz that INTREPID was going to be scrapped on the Tyne At A&Ps yard at Hebburn but I doubt it will ever happen.
Regards
Dave
They're still in Pompey Dave. I took this photo on Saturday 13th.
Nice shot Alan but can you tell which is which ? The mast is a dead give a way
Dave
I can't tell Dave. I can see they're different but if I look up for too long I get dizzy:) Here's one I did earlier.
Alan
Once again Alan i'm wide open to get shot down, but i was always of the impression that INTREPID had the taller mast in fact it was supposed to be the tallest in the fleet,Anybody know different ?
Regards
Dave
Dave
How about the Victory?:confused::o
Alan,
Now that is splitting hairs mate but you could be right , i never gave VICTORY a throught.
Dave
Dave
Perhaps we'll both get shot down now.
Anyway, going back to the Carysfort, I'm sure she was another of my old mucker Joe Archers, who I mentioned in another thread re Ulster and her bumper-car tactics, ships. I'll have to catch up with him, have a tot or two, and find out.
All the best
Alan
Great pictures thanks for sharing

Whats the Commando Carrier in the background in picture ID285?
I don't think it is a Commando Carrier:) (I could be wrong though!!!:o)
It looks like a Gannet on deck right forr'ad and the wessex helicopters are the wrong colour for a "Junglie" sqdn - they look more like "pingers"
Could it be Centaur?
FAA helicopters:-
Junglie - RN commando helicopter sqdn
Pinger - Rn Sonar "dipping" helicopter sqdn

If Teuchter (post #17) is referring to the 17th photo in post #1 of this thread, then I believe the carrier in the background is either HMAS SYDNEY or MELBOURNE - she's certainly not a Centaur class ship.

Pic 8 shows the stern. X gun replaced by two squid mortars.

Mitch,
Post #1 photo 8 shows "Y" mounting and the Squid magazine which replaced "X" mounting.

The choppers look like Mk 1 Wessex, so they will only have the earlier shallow dip sonar, and the Gannet also seems to be a Mk 1 with the older "Dustbin" radar.
Does this help any?
Steve
Most likely Melbourne pretty sure Sydney did tolerate those types of aircraft at that time
