Can anyone shed light on the activities of HMS Colombo in the period 1933 to 1935 please.

We have been given a photo album with the title "HMS Colomba 1933-35" that were taken , we think, by RN seaman Eric Barnes. The album has 120 b&w photos. Most are of scenes in and around ports east of Suez but there are also pics of the ceremony of "Crossing the Line". two other pages include naval excercises such as firing and recovering a torpedo, gun practice, depth charging and making smoke before the album concludes with a photo of Captain C E B Simeon.

We have a photo dated 1933 of Eric in Jerusalem in naval rating's uniform with a shipmate. The ships' name isn't discerible from their caps but we would like to find out if they were on HMS Colombo and that the pic was taken during a stop-over before passing through the SZuez Canal.

Ports of call in the album east of Suez include Colombo, Bahrein, Rufiji Delta, Seychelles, Diyatalawa (including a photo of a hfox cut into a hillside with the date 1913) Vizagapatam, Rangoon and Trivandrum.

Eric Barnes was an HMS Ganges boy who joined the Submarine Service in 1936 and died in July 1940 on HMS Phoenix when she was sunk by the Italian shiop Albatross off Sicily.

We would like to verify our belief that he took the photos in his service prior to joining submarines.

Can anyone help, please, with information that will establish that he was part of the crew of HMS Colombo, and that she was in these several places ain the period 1933-35.

A photo of HMS Colombo taken in May 1937.

HMS Colombo - Light Cruiser 4190 tons 451.5' x 43.9'

I used to own a Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to a man who was a CPO Cook on this ship when he received his Medal.

Thanks Bob. The angle makes the bow look much higher - probably just an optical illusion.

I think the main armament was changed during WWII from 5x6" to 6x4" to use her in an AA role (presumably high elevation 4").

I like all the scuttles, it must have been good having natural light during the day in most of the messdecks, rather than living in permanent artificial light. That's assuming you weren't trying to sleep!

A different angle - sorry about the writing coming through from the back of the card - but it is my favourite shot of the old cruiser...

Hello John, I am sure that some one will come along and fill in the gaps for you. In the meantime, would you like to share any of the photos with us. We would be pleased to look at them. If so, please remember to scan tham to a large size, around 1800 dpi, so that the detail can be perused.

I can confirm that COLOMBO was in the places mentioned -
she commissioned in June 1933 for service with the 4th Cruiser Squadron, East Indies under Captain C E B Simeon; she arrived in Indian waters in September of that year.

During 1933 - 35 she paid several port calls to Indian ports; she also deployed to the Persian Gulf in November 33 - January 34, visiting Cochin;Goa; Karachi; Muscat; Basra; Abadan.

In May - July 1934 she cruised along the East African ports, including Somalia and Mombasa.

She returned to England in November 1935 to pay off into reserve.

It would therefore seem most likely that he did indeed serve onboard Colombo June 33 - November 35
