My grandfather Joseph Sartoris served on the Goeben during WW1.By all accounts he was young man that lived life to the full and there is a family story that one Christmas he swam from the Goeben to the Breslau her sister ship with a decorated Christmas tree,I would love to validate this story.
I have no photographs of his crew on the Goeben but I have a shore leave photo of Joseph and friends somewhere in Turkey which I will post on to the site as soon as I can find it.
I am starting to put together an family archive on the Goeben so I would be delighted for any stories from crew members families.
Regards Alan Thompson.

Hello Alan
I have just spotted your thread in World Navy Ships Forum. Have you read 'The ship that changed the world' The escape of the Goeben to the Dardanelles in 1914. by Dan Van Dervat. Paper back. Printed 1985. Let me know if you are at all interested.
No cost, but perhaps postage.

Cheers..Harry

That is an excellent book and, IMO, the author got it quite right. Those two ships had a PROFOUND change on the shape of the world after WW I....without them being there...??? DFO :)

So right. Just another of those little 'mishaps' which we seem so good at.

Hmm, I'm not convinced by the "ships that changed the world" theory. The Turks were already on a seemingly inevitable path to war on the side of the Germans and "Goeben" and "Breslau" were the icing on the cake - sort of. They ended up with a battle-cruiser they had to keep running for fifty years!

My view came from reading the source materiels in Gilbert's first volume of the life of Churchill ("The Challenge of War"). I'm glad I didn't come about this impression by accident, as apparently a German historian has espoused it before (see the bottom section of http://www.gwpda.org/naval/souchonz.htm)!

It would be very much appreciated if you would put them up.

My avatar is a photo taken at the island Dhenoussa where the GOEBEN coaled on her way to the Dardanelles.

There are few photos of Goeben one sees these days, it would be really great to have more posted, especially those "never before published" types. She lasted a long time. The book on the USS Missouri has a photo of her anchored with Goeben in the background -- now there is a contrast!

Please feel free to post here any good photos you have of the goeben many of our members would greatly appreciate seeing them.
It is easy to do this.
If they are scanned at a decent size onto your computer [say 300dpi or larger] to upload them here involves simply finding the paperclip symbol at the top of any message reply box [or new message box].

Anyway to upload the pictures on your computer. You first of all type out the message you wish to send with the pictures.
Then if you look at the top of the box where you have typed your message you will notice the paperclip symbol.

Clicking on to that will bring up another little box with a column of "buttons" with the word browse on them.
Each time you click on one of those buttons it will take you to where you have stored your photos in your computer.
If you say have 3 photos you wish to post then you would click on three buttons.

when you have finished then you click on upload and wait the couple of minutes or so it takes for the browse box to clear.

then finally you click on "submit message" which will send your post along with the photos which will be displayed together. :):)
