Newly released papers show his opposition:

Sorry that link seems to be down but it is after all a fact that he served in the US as an attache i think and knew that the americans would not sit still for an attack and suspected that the hope of the military high command that they would be able to grab half of the pacific and then make a deal was unrealistic.

Couldn`t agree more John.

I made the very same point in post #7 in the thread below...

Yes, the Japanese newspaper sites are quite ephemeral.

One does note that in the end, although the plans of the Naval Imperial Staff didn't work right at all, they did actually get half of the Pacific. The bottom half.

For those with Google Earth, there is a download showing all the IJN losses of WW2 and their positions. It's an amazing piece of work, and allows you to display all losses or selected classes of ships such as cruisers, carriers etc.
Each 'flag' represents a ship and clicking the 'flag' gives details of the ship. More details are shown the more you zoom in.

I don't think there is a way to directly post the link, so go to the GE forum herehttp://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=926521#Post926521
and you can download the file from the first post.

The 2 images below give some idea of the display on Google Earth.

Trust me, you can 'play' with this for hours and not cover it all

Fantastic that someone has gone to the extent they have to document the IJN losses. Thanks a lot for bringing it to our attention. Probably have a few dozen of us cruising the site by tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying it. Yes an amazing project and I dread to think how many man hours it took. The same guy, if I recall correctly, also did ones for Italian and German ship losses. A search of the GE forum should bring them up.
