It is with my great sadness to pass on the RAdm W.M. Landymore passed away on 27 Nov 2008, In Nova Scotia at the camp hill veterans memorial hospital.
Born in Brantford Ontario on 31 July 1916, Landymore served on 14 ships over his career including: HMS Frobisher, HMS Glasgow, HMS Urchin, HMS Emerald,
HMS Windsor, HMS Belfast, HMS Ulster, HMS Grenville As well as HMCS Fraser, HMCS Margaree, HMCS Restigouche, HMCS Uganda, HMCS Iroquois and the HMCS Bonaventure.

Admiral Landymore is the founder of our corps, and i am just wanting to see if anyone has pictures of any of those ships. To have them hanging in our Wardroom would be awesome. I Met the Admiral once when i was the cox'n of the corps. Now an officer we have to tell our cadets that hes has passed away.

On all the oceans, white caps flow.
There are no crosses row on row,
But those who sleep beneath the deep,
Rest in peace your Countries free.

Then a few destroyers - Ulster, Grenville and Windsor.

Not wishing to monopolise I will see if anyone else comes up with some of the others.
If there is no response I will post some of the others later.

Sad news. I am pretty sure that he was with the carrier HMCS Bonaventure and not the cruiser. I could be wrong. I'll have to check the excellent book of our last carrier to be sure.

You are correct. Admiral Landymore was the commanding officer of HMCS Bonaventure from Jan. 15, 1958 to Sept. 11, 1959. He held the rank of Captain at the time.

It is a pity that some of the others here cannot help find some of the other ships needed. When I can get the time I will check on my other computer where I do have some of them there...

Terry, I have sent a PM offering help with photo's and badges from my collection to send to him via e-mail if required a few days ago, not had a reply back as yet.

I thought it would be better than trying to post 14 ships photo's and then 14 ships badges onto another thread.

I was sad to have read of the death of Rear-Admiral Landymore. Quite apart from his outstanding work as a naval officer his stand in the unification controversy should endear him to many. After a big hoo-hah with Paul Hellyer over allowing dissatisfied officers to leave the service with honour, he had only four days before he was forcibly retired from the R.C.N.

Noone had bothered updating the Wikipedia article so I did that a few days ago.

Very sorry to finally be getting back to you all, These past two weeks have been very stressful. I will have you all know that with your help i managed to make our Branch President cry at our Annual Christmas Mess dinner. I did receive all the ships i needed, One of our Officers works for a printing company so he printed them all off, i presented them on Saturday night after a fun filled night at our Mess Dinner.

I would like to thank all of you for your help, as it was instant that i got responses back from you all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

One of the Admirals good friends was present at our dinner and he said that Bill (Admiral Landymore) would be proud of us. So here i pass on our thanks to you all for making a lasting memory of a great Sailor. Our cadets also filled a memory box with letters to the Admirals family in condolences from our Corps. Merry Christmas to you all and thanks for making mine a Great one.

I am so pleased your presentation went so well and that the forum was able to assist in making it possible for you, that's what we are all about...

Do please continue to use the forum and hopefully some of the cadets will also use the forum as it's always a good educational tool, the members thrive on be able to pass on info, photo's etc.

Best wishes and a merry christmas to all.

Regards
Alan

I wonder if any of our Canadian online friends have any photos with Rear Admiral Landymore in the pictures. It would be great to share these as there are few good pictures of the admiral in public archives at the provincial and national level, and they are rare indeed even in the maritime command museum in Halifax.

Here a a couple of photos taken in July, 1966. This was the day Rear-Admiral Landymore said goodbye having been forced to 'retire' after losing his fight to save the RCN from being consolidated into a unified armed forces. He was given a hero's departure. This was a very sad day for the Canadian Navy.:(

these are great photos. My father was a Petty Officer First Class and recounts standing on the stairs to the old headquarters building as Rear Admiral Landymore bid his farewell to staff, friends and sailors alike. If there is any way to source more photos of Admiral Landymore it would be greatly appreciated from forum members. We are fast approaching the May 1st memorial service for him in Halifax and additional photo history will help tell his story and the context of naval affairs in his era.

He was a great man, who tried to presuade his govermnet of the mistake of Unification. A mess the navy is still trying to dig itself out of. A sad day for the Canadain Navy and a loss for Canada as a whole Old Naval Guard PS Long Live the Royal Canadain Navy Ready Aye Ready:D
