We have just added some crew photos of the WWII submarine USS Silversides to the site. 17 photos in all, some of groups and some of individuals, one of which is Pharmacist Moore. According to the organisation which maintains the USS Silversides as a museum in Michigan, the most publicised operation (medically speaking) of the war was performed on USS Silversides, when Pharmacist's Mate Thomas Moore removed the appendix of another crew member, using makeshift equipment and a surgical team made up of volunteers. More info on their site - the link is below.

All the photos are currently on the following link :

(scroll down for the photos - it is a long list of submarines, then photos of some of them) but I have included a selection here. The organisation website is here: http://www.glnmm.org/silversides.htm

My father, John Timson, served in the US Navy during WWII. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was very young so my brothers and I know very little about his service. The information we have is that he served on a subtender, possibly the AS 24, the Anthedon. However, his discharge papers do not list this ship, but includes the Silversides instead. We have several pictures that indicate that he certainly was near the Silversides, someone has suggested he may have been a member of the decommissioning crew.

Here is a picture that I believe is taken of the deck of the Silversides. The number is not visible, but I have matched the "Sunk" and "Damaged" record to a modern photo taken at the ship's current berth in MI. The man in the picture is not my father.

Any assistance from anyone in filling some blanks for us would be greatly appreciated.

I believe one of these gentlemen was my grandfather.
The one kneeling just to the left of the gentleman with the full beard.
In the left hand bottom corner, approx. 3rd one in...
Does anyone know who he might have been?
Or maybe any other info for him. His name was Arley "Bud" Hanson, born June 21, 1921. He was stationed in California around the early 1940's and served on the USS Silversides SS 236. I don't know much else.
Thank you!
