Good Morning, Chalky. Rise and shine. I have included Gardenia in case that's what you wanted. ( No Gardiner). No luck with Ironbound or Byard either. Enjoy. Rob T

Hi Chalky - I have the same Willowherb as been posted - but include a bigger Nasturtium and a different Badger.
After the weekend I will try and hook up my other computer as I have some of the others on there...
There's an HMS Ironbound in the 3rd row of pictures, would that be the one your searching for ?

Hello Chaps,
Thankyou so much Jonti, Alan, Terry and Lew.
What a fantastic web site this is, never surpassed I reckon.
I posted my request last night and somehow I knew that when I clicked on first thing this morning my request would have been answered.
HMS Byard does seem to be a problem though even Don Collingwood who wrote The Captain Class Frigates was unable to come up with a photo of this ship. I think I might try with an American USN Commander friend to make some enquiries of the builders records.
For you book buffs The Captain Class Frigates is an excellent read.

Thanks again chaps.

HMS Byard (USS Donaldson) is indeed difficult to find a picture of. I presume you have seen this one of her launching on 6th March 1943?

Thanks for that John. That just goes to show that there were photos taken at her launch which is something. There must be a photo too I guess of when she was handed over to the RN. I have two such of the ceremony on the Quarter Deck of the commissioning into the RN of a sister ship HMS Braithwaite and I would hazard a guess that every ship was the same with photos taken.
Thanks again.

Thanks for your comments DJ but I think I can explain.
There were in fact two Buckley Class destroyer escorts built named USS Donaldson.
1: USS Donaldson DE55 was launched and built by Bethlehem-Hingham on 6th March 1943 and was handed over to the Royal Navy and named HMS Byard K315. This ship was returned to the USN 12th December 1945 and scrapped.
2: USS Donaldson DE44 was launched at Puget Sound N Y (Bremerton) on 1st August 1943. This ship remained in US service and was sold for scrap on 2nd July 1946.
This is most probably the ship you are referring to as being in USN service.

I have just checked my other computer and unfortunately do not have a picture of Byard either.
I do have some Captain and Buckley Class Frigate pictures there -
Aylmer,Balfour,Bentinck,Bickerton,Bligh,
Conn,Cosby,Curzon,Dacres,Dakins,Duckworth,
Ekins,Essington,Foley,Grindall,
Halsted,Holmes,Hotham,Inglis,
Inman,Lawford,Lawson,Rupert,
Spragge,Staynor and Thornborough - but not Byard!!
If any of these are of interest just say the word - they vary a bit in quality but both the Captain and Buckley Class ships
are quite difficult to find many pictures...

Thanks for that Terry. What a star you are with all your photos.
It's a strange thing that some RN ships were extremely camera shy and HMS Byard is certainly within that group. However I have a USN Commander friend whom I shall put on the trail with the builders.
Thanks again pal.

Thanks Terry.
My interest in the ships I originally asked for photos is that these were ships which featured in the service of the Americans in the RNVR which as you know is a long running project of mine. HMS Byard, for example, was commanded by one of my American volunteers.
However that is not to say that I, and a lot of others I dare say, would love to see those other Buckley Class frigates of which you have photos. Apart from photos of ships in which I have a particular interest I appreciate seeing all ship photos on this wonderful Forum and of which you are such an integral and important part.

Strewth Chalky - you dont ask for easy ones do you!
As you say Evadne is a large yacht that was used as a tender for a while -I have never seen a picture of her.
What is [HMS?] Tamarine as I can find nothing about her?
I will look on my 2 computers for pictures of HMS Richmond/USS Fairfax in the meantime here is a quick picture for you...
Sorry to say, Chalky, nothing from me this time. Rob T

Hello Chaps,
Thanks for all your replies.
These last requests I made of you are I appreciate somewhat difficult as they are mainly minor vessels. In that respect photographs are few and far between.
Evadne for example was the private yacht of Sir Richard Fairey and was requisitioned in 1939 and used as an anti submarine training vessel. It was when it was based in the Bermuda area that one of my Americans in the RNVR was serving on it briefly.
HMS Tamarine was I am pretty sure an Admiralty tug, or somesuch vessel, and was I'm pretty sure in the RCN. Another American RNVR officer was serving on this vessel but I am not sure whether that was in Canadian waters or elsewhere.
Like all of this project it has been one huge jig saw puzzle.
Your help and interest is much appreciated.

Chalky, could this possibly be the ship your searching for ?
Looks like she may still be afloat.

Thanks for that Lew it looks like you have cracked it. Certainly Evadne was built in 1931.That has given me lots of leads to follow up.

Hello Terry,
I have tracked down a superb photo of Evadne in 1936 which I would think was her builders photo. It is held by Bekens of Cowes and a 10 x 8 is £40 which I shall have to put on my Christmas list!!
Just goes to show though that these photos are out there somewhere which you must know all about.
