Hello Forum:

I'm Jeff, from Melbourne. No military experience - just a former inland boy's ethusiasm for all things nautical.

I'm hoping to post a fairly extensive photo spread soon in the Australian section on Australia's aircraft carrier years (1949-1982), and part of my intention here is to post a test image to see whether your photo posting procedures operate in the same way as on another topic website to which I'm accustomed.

Please bear with me while I attempt this photo post from HMAS Sydney (1950s):

Hmmm, well that worked.

But I notice your forumers usually post thumbnails or links to images. It may sound lame but I don't actually know how to do that.

Is there any etiquette or site capacity limitations here against posting photographs direct from my host site (Photobucket) to the thread?

Thanks. Kookaburra.

Welcome to the forum kookaburra - there is no forum rule against posting pictures direct but we do prefer that you use the expanding thumbnail version as it makes the page easier to open and takes up less space.

I will send you a PM [private message] on the best way to do this...:)

Thank you for the welcomes and advice.:) This is a first test for thumbnailing an image, but because I don't see any IMG codes appearing I doubt it's going to work.

If so, please ignore my further fumbling efforts here, while I continue to work this out.

Dammit it did work - no host site needed anymore! The image is the flightdeck of HMAS Melbourne in the late 1950s, with original aircraft complement (Sea Venoms and Fairey Gannets) aboard. Source: R.A.N. official.
It's one of a collection I'm putting together for the Australia section, from books and other sources, on Australia's aircraft carrier era.

I'll post the collection in several days. Thanks again astraltrader for the successful advice.

An excellent shot Kookaburra - I will transfer this whole thread to the Australian ship section tomorrow, as we like to keep this section just for new members to introduce themselves.

You will then be able to add to this thread as much as you like.

We will look forward to seeing your pictures!:)

Yes, thank you all for the kind welcome. I apologise if I have not introduced myself properly, with a full name - as I see is a widely practiced custom here. There's a reason for my hesitation: a lifetime as a journalist which makes me a little uncomfortable about mixing the personal with a modest public profile.

It's not easy to explain, but there's no great mystery about it - and I hope you will overlook that, and just allow me to remain as kookaburra, the laughing jackass. Whom I hope will contribute some genuinely worthwhile posts from time to time. Thanks again.

Hi Jeff welcome to the site. I've got lots of fond memories of OZ.I've crossed it by rail from Perth to Sydney.By road from Darwin to Adelaide. Don't know how I got past the Alice on that trip. I could have set like a jelly there. I'm spending this Christmas and New Year in Sydney. Can't wait,I'm desperate for some sunshine.
