Here's a nice photo we added to the site recently, showing the fleet at Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Revieew in 1887.

I have always admired this photo as it shows the transition of the RN from the old wooden walls to the modern and more cohesive iron/steel engined navy it had become, at the forefront of all available technologies at that time, and with a vast Empire to ensure remains safe, together with all the merchant ships sailing the seven seas transporting our huge export output and returning with a huge and diverse eclectic mix of goods.

This was also a remarkable period of peace, with only the odd skirmish here and there.

The paddle steamer is an especially nice touch, showing the increased leisure time many could enjoy in this fast moving technological era.
