Info Required

A friend has asked if I can find any information on a medal which he has had in his possession for some time but does not know where it came from.

It appears to be a medal awarded for a Regimental competition, possibly marksmanship. The edge of the medal is engraved with 'won by Private Edw P Oliver two successive years 1862 and 1863'

I would be grateful for any info on the medal and its award, Private Oliver or the 16th Somerset Rifle Volunteers'

I have seen medals such as the one illustated-it is a private Regimental medal awarded to Best Shot with a rifle, for a particular year.Motive for their existance is simple -to improve marksmanship. All Volunteer Rifles units were subsumed by the newly instituted Teritorial Force in 1908.
