Medals for Long Service in the Royal Navy and the various Reserve Units have been covered in other threads. However a relatively new addition for long service in a naval organisation is the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service Medal.
This medal was instituted in July 2001 for service in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service. The medal is awarded after 20 years service to officers, petty officers and ratings. In addition clasps are awarded for a further 10 years service. The medals are impressed on the rim with the recipient's name and rank and the date of qualification for the medal.
The obverse (front) shows the crowned effigy of the Queen. The reverse shows the RFA badge with the words Royal Fleet Auxiliary - For Long Service. The ribbon has a blue centre with narrow stripes of green, gold and purple on either side.
Although the first awards were made in 2003, a relatively small number of awards have been made to date and very few medals have appeared on the market. Photographs of an example of the medal that I have acquired are shown below.
