View Full Version : I've come looking for info
Well, I've joined here to help my Uncle find any info/crew mates from the Battleship New Mexico.
But as for intro info, I'm Tim, from Western PA.
My uncle is Russ Watson, currently in Australia, originally from Western PA also.
He was on the New Mexico in it's last days, around '46-'47, at the Boston Navy yard.
He's also looking for specs on the first ship he was on, around the same time, the Seagoing tug ATR64. I've only just joined , so I haven't searched the site yet, but that's going to start after I post this.
Thanks for any info, and I'll add this on the US Navy Ships & Crews forum also.
My hat's off to any and all here who have, are or will be serving. You are the best !!
Tim
Hi Tim
Go to www.navsource.org
click on Battleships and you should find all you need
Fair winds

Thanks for the link, Alan. Certainly a lot of info from there!
I have now found a good bit on the Battleship that I'm sure my Uncle will like, but haven't found anything at all yet on the ATR64 tug? (except from Google photo's, of a double decker bus with the same designation #)
All he remembers about it is that it was of wood construction and powered by a 3 cyl steam engine. He believed it was built in '41.
Atleast I'm making some headway here!!
Thanks again Alan.
Tim
Hi again Tim
Go back to the Navsource site, go to Auxiliary and Service Force Ships, Scroll down to "ATR" Rescue Ocean Tug and there you are again.
There are a couple of photos and little info.
Hope this again helps
Alan
That's SUPER!!!!!
Mostly my Uncle was hoping for a picture of it, and you led me right to them.
He'd said he was too young to think about getting any pictures at that time.
It was also the first ship he served on.
This will make his day!! (well, maybe his night, seeing as he's on the other side of the world, LOL.
Thanks a ton Alan, for your assistance. I salute you!
Really glad I found this site.
Only too happy to help Tim.
Perhaps you could help me now.
Where did you find the double-decker bus ATR64 please.

That's the least I could do for you Alan....
I searched Google images and it came up.
Looks to be some foreign site. I'd post the picture here, but on that site they ask that ya don't :(
It has this description:
Dennis Trident 12m with Duple Mestec Body
No.ĦJATR64(HX9847)
Location: Mei Tin Road
DateĦJ22/2/2003
Thanks for that Tim.
It's a Kowloon Bus, Hong Kong.
Did you follow the link on the navsource site? As far as I could see ATR 64 was still around in 2003.
All the best
Alan

Yes I did. It was interesting to find this info on it...
The only surviving example of the John Alden designed ATR class of rescue tug, originally built for the US Navy between 1942 and 1944,
And I'm still finding more as I search deeper. This is becoming more and more interesting.
Tim
Keep me informed Tim please.
I'm finding this interesting too.
Alan:)
