Good Evening All.
Glad to have been allowed to come aboard. I have not been any of the services , but I come from a seafaring family, my mother was a stenographer for Canadian Pacific when she was young and did 190 crossings of the North Atlantic before she left to get married. My uncle was drowned at sea of the coast of Tobruk by U-559.
The main reason I came aboard was to try and trace my Great Uncle. He was Chief Yeoman of Signals on board H.M.S.Lion at the battle of Jutland. His name was Albert Churchill.
I have a letter written by him while serving on H.M.S. Hercules in 1915 patrolling the "German Ocean", I assume he meant the North Sea.
I would be grateful there is anybody here that can help me.
Thank you
Michael

You are very welcome here Michael. Perhaps you might modify your data to show where you are in general terms.

Members here will be able to help you re your great Uncle. Do you have any further info.?

Gosh, Michael, my Grandfather was a Leading signalman on Princess royal at Jutland. He told me that during the night the Lion signalled the Princess Royal, "Please let me have the challenge and answer now in force as they have been lost." He signalled the required information back, but unfortunately the Germans caught part of the message, which was en clar, and used it to confuse the British by flashing it at all and sundry.

Who knows, perhaps my Grandfather and your relative were flashing at each other on the night of May 31st, 1916.

Welcome aboard Michael.

Have you looked for your GUs service record at the National Archives? It will give you the ships he served on and his service number.
