Baswold
Cannot think of any RN ships or subs named 'M5'. However, try researching Royal Naval Monitors and in particular HMS 'Sir John Moore'.
Good luck!!
Thanks John. have looked there but cannot find it.

Hi Baswold
I remember reading somewhere that either HMS John Moore or her entire class of monitors was designated M5. I am just wondering if, over the years, this has been passed down incorrectly to you as HMS M5.
Just a thought!

Hi John,
Yoiu probably have forgotten about this thread ...!! Just found it whilst doing a bit of cleaning up.
The Class to which Sir John Moore belonged was the Lord Clive Class of Monitors. There was a later Class M15 (M15-M28), and an M29 Class (M29-M23). The Class that beagn M15, was started at that number because origninally the numbering was going to include all of the monitors. However, there seem to be more than 14 in the previous classes? So the M5 still seems to be a mystery
Don't know whether since this thread, it has cropped up somewhere else ... haven't searched.
Additional Info.
Just had another dig; the four monitors of Abercrombie Class were originally listed as M1-M4, but were later given names after leaders in the American Civil War. In this case, one could logically assume that the first of the Lord Clive Class - Earl of Peterborough, completed in 1915, could have ben referred to as M5. Maybe ..?
Cheers

Good shot Rik ... how on earth did you drag that one up...!! Pity we didn't get a date from Baswold.
M5, Controlled Minelayer completed 2nd November 1940. Renamed Britannic 1960. Picture here:

No doubt our member Baswold has long left us here, and we will never know; how frustrating ...!!

Well done Clive and Rik.
Doesn't look as though Baswold hung around to benefit from the fruits of our labours though!
Regards...John
All Monitors within this group of 8 were given provisonal M numbers after the tenders from the various yards had been recieved and allotted. As alreadt stated the future Sir John Moore was allocated M5 at Scotts of Greenock
