the island of Guernsey was occupied by German forces from early 1942 until the 9th of may 1945 , May the 9th is a public holiday in Guernsey in 2005 in order to celebrate 60 years of freedom a cavalcade was held that included a number of military vehicles

Thanks for the posting and these pictures. The occupation of the Channel Islands was most unpleasant. It's good that the inhabitants celebrate their freedom.

Nigel - I think you will find that you are a little bit out with your dates for the German occupation of the Channel Islands.
It wasnt 1942 but the 30th June 1940 that five Junker troop carriers landed in Guernsey and marked the very beginning of very nearly 5 years of Nazi occupation...

the date for the occupation may indeed be wrong having celebrated may the 9th as liberation day for 50 years we never were told the date of the start of the occupation and searching hurriedly for this date on line last night i miss read the occupation society web site that stated that the fortification of Guernsey began in early 1942

Spent my 20th Wedding Anniversary in Guernsey last year !! A really fascinating island. The creepiest part was visiting the German underground military hospital. Iwouldn't have liked to be taken there.....................

I visited the underground German hospital about 8 years ago as well, but it was on Jersey. Unless there is also one on Guernsey??
I agree it was creepy!

Definitely one on Guernsey, Terry. Dark, dank and utterly creepy............

See this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/guernsey/content/articles/2004/07/20/german_military_underground_hospital_about_feature .shtml

Fair enough squire. They obviously had one on both islands which if you think about it makes sense. The one on Jersey was equally dank and creepy! I think about all the poor prisoners "employed" by the German Todt organisation who hewed them literally out of the rock whilst enduring the most horrific conditions imaginable. Thousands of Russians, Slavs, Poles and others died in their construction...

as a proud Guernsey man who has a natural rivalry with anything Jersey i have to admit that the Jersey underground hospital is a far better attraction than the Guernsey one
