First of all, I'm new to this place. So, hello to ye' all :)

I have always been fascinated by aviation. And carrier aviation as been the subject for my greatest interest.

And I have read quite a lot of books about it. Mostly about the WWII and Vietnam era.

The latest books I have read on the subject are by Rear Admiral Paul T, Gillcrist (Ret): 'Feet Wet: Reflections of a Carrier Pilot', 'Vulture’s Row: Thirty Years in Naval Aviation', 'Crusader: Last of the gunfighters' and 'Tomcat!: The Grumman F-14 Story'

But these, and the others I have read, are all from the pilot's perspectives.

Now, people like 'The Air Boss', 'plane handlers', 'LSO' (A pilot, I know ;) ) and 'catapult officers' are mentioned. But their jobs are not described in details. (Except that, as I read somewhere: The Air Boss is God! ;) )

I wonder if any of you could recommend some good books about the carries and the men operating them?

Cheers

J

Welcome to the forum Jesper. There are several threads here relating to carriers including one made by Popeye that has some excellent hi-res pictures. Have a look in the US Ships forum.

G'Day All

Hi J.

The book you should be looking for to explain carrier operations inside and out is Tom Clancy's Carrier!

It is the one I recommend! Find it, enjoy!:D

Oh, Paul Gilchirst is great! 'Tomcat' it brilliant, but see if you can get 'Bye Bye Baby' on the Tomcat, it is a GREAT read, damn funny too!
