Hello All I am trying to find how to trace any info on Able Seaman Herbert James Scott who was a stoker on HMS Ruler about 1945-46 until he jumped ship in Singapore or Australia. Can any one advice the route to go down to find any info how ever small as he was my father.
Thankyou Sylvia

Hello Sylvia and welcome aboard.

There is a confusion in your statement regarding your father being an AB and a Stoker. These were two different ratings (jobs if you like) and as far as I know they were never combined. Generally seamen operated in the upper levels of the ship and stokers were in the engineroom.

I think you need to obtain your father's service record as a first step, as it should clear up where he jumped ship and exactly what his rating was.

This is the address you need to apply to, but it might be as well to telephone them first to find out what documents you will need to submit to prove that you are a member of the family.

Hello David
Thankyou for your prompt reply. My father was a stoker why I put Able Seaman I don't know. Stoker is on my parents wedding cert. and that is all I know about him.
Thankyou for your suggestions and the address which I will write to with my inquiry.

Regards
Sylvia

Sylvia,

Hi and welcome to the forum, 'jumping ship' is naval slang for deserting, all men who deserted were awarded a 'warrant for arrest' and the details published in the Police Gazette. Now were you would find them for 1945/46 I'm not sure, but the National Archives would be a good start.
