Hi
My Grandfather- William Stephen Kelly - served on HMS Triumph and was injured when torpedoed at Dardanelles 1915.
I have a couple of photos of him and fellow sailors which are very faint although I have no idea where or when they were taken.
I also have an original newspaper report detailing HMS Triumph action prior to sinking.
I have just started detailing our family history and would love to clarify my memories of his stories of his sinking and injuries.
Do any crew records exist and/or can I get his records ?
Many thanks
Andy

AndyC welcome to the Forum. We will be very interested to see your photos, you may have some that are of interest to HMS, the thread starter. Here are a few pics of HMS Triumph, unfortunately none of the crew.

Hi
Thanks for that.
Unfortunately the photos are so faded that I cannot get a decent scan of them with my scanner. I will have to see if I can get them professionally enhanced in some way.( Any suggestions ?)
The only good quality shot is of my grandfather William Stephen Kelly of Douglas, Isle of Man.
I believe that he and some other Brits were on a foreign merchant ship when war broke out and were put ashore. they made their way to Singapore (or Hong Kong ?) and joined up.
If I can get a decent reproduction of the other photos I will post them at a later date.
Cheers

I've a decent scanner and software and will extract whatever detail is in the negs if you fancy it?

You won't need a professional, they won't be able to retieve anything your scanner can't, it's all down to your scanner settings. Try it yourself with no tone adjustment at all and see what you get.

The Chilean Navy ordered two battleships from Britain, but they were purchased by the Admiralty in 1903 to prevent them falling into Russian hands. (Not sure of the reasoning there). They were renamed Triumph and Swiftsure.

This one is aboard HMS Triumph.

I am the grandchild of Thomas Dove ( 1913-1915 HMS Triumph ). I have posted a wonderful photo of the crew on board 1915, where my Grandfather is standing on the left side of the photo holding a piece of paper. My Grandfather was torpedoed on HMS Triumph 25 May 1915 in the Dardanelles and picked up by HMS Majestic, which was torpedoed 2 days later 27May1915 ( makes you wonder how you can survive such an experience and continue onward to live till 85yrs old). Thomas Dove was a most wonderful husband, father, grandfather & great grandfather. He taught all his grandchildren to be the very best they could be and praised us for any effort we ever made, even when we could not hold a candle to his exemplory strength of character and determination. I remember listening to his stories of the China Seas (Shanghai ), Malta & The Dardanelles, thinking how glamorous these far flung places were, but in reality "Pop" had painted a much prettier picture for his young family. When I visited Shanghai, Malta & Istanbul in later years, I realised how Pop's journey during the WW1 was certainly not the Cook's Tour he had made it sound. A very brave man, who was my Grandpa Pop who will be remembered forever. Thanks "Pop" for all your wonderful knowledge. Love you Always.

Hi All,
this is my first post on this forum which I have found as IM researching my family history.

I have recently downloaded my Grandfathers Naval Records from the National Archives website. These records show that my grandfather served on HMS Triumph from the 6th Aug 1914 to 1st June 1915.

I never knew my grandfarther Fred Gunn as he passed away before I was born but I understand from my father that he was in the Dardenells campaign and was torpedoed. Apparantly, he was rescued by a fellow seaman and they later became great friends.

Looking at the Wikipedia website for HMS Triumph, for WW1 she was ready for sea on the 6th Aug 1914 and then took part in varyious campaingns before finally being torpedoed 25th May 1915.

If anyone has further information on crew lists, photos etc I would be fascinated to see them.

I have attached a link to his naval record Here (http://www.farnhamweather.co.uk/pics/fred-gunn-navy.pdf) and would be interested to know whatit all means
