Hi - my name is Ina and I am trying to find out about HMS Wye. My father served on this ship but I can find little individual reference to it. A River Class corvette it was involved in anti-submarine detection in convoys. Anyone got anything more specific?

Hi
Don't know much about this particular ship but if you go to this site, click on 'old ship picture gallery' then 'ships Q-Z' you will see a picture of HMS Wye K371 (if you don't already have one. The River Class are sometimes classed as Frigates and/or Corvettes so searching for both might turn something up. The Builder was Henry Robb & Co of Leith in Scotland and she was laid down on 16/08/43 and launched on 9/02/44. HMS Wye was scrapped on 22/02/55.

Hope this helps
Hi Ina
I don't know if this helps but my father also served on HMS Wye. I'm afraid I don't know too much detail but he was certainly on the Frigate (his word) when she sailed to Sierra Leone. He had been a signaller with the Army serving in the Worcestershire Regiment when he was transferred to the Navy and was certainly used as a signaller on this particular voyage. I remember that he told me the passage through the Bay of Biscay was so rough he was tied to the mast so that he could maintain his position on the Aldis lamp. Dad left the ship at Freetown and spent the rest of the war shore-based in British West Africa
Dad died some years ago now but when I next see mom I'll ask her if she remembers anything more, and if there is anything of interest I'll post it.

There is never any need to go to the Old Ships Gallery - any warship they feature we have either already got a picture in the forum or can get one if asked and at usually a size far larger than the small examples to be found there!
