My father worked on the Orion in 1936 from Australia to UK. He took photos on his trip however he is gone and we have discovered the negatives only. Can anyone identify the attached photos of submarines. I believe it may have been taken in Naples or Malta - these being two of the places he visited. He also visited Toulon and Gibraltar. I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks jv1

Welcome to the Forum jnv1. I hope you get some answers here.

The photo is rather small which won't help identification.

I note you mention Toulon that your father visited. Do you mean Tolon in Greece?

I would have thought he was referring to the big French port and naval base Toulon...

Yes, the Port was Toulon in France. Thanks jnv1

Hello jv1,

I think the photo was made in Naples as the boats are Italian.
I don't like submarines and I've never been especially interested in this subject.
On the other hand I have checked my sources concerning Italian Navy and
comparing the pics my suggestions are as following:

Three ships (counting from right to left) belong to four ships class Balilla (Balilla, Domenico Millelire, Antonio Sciesa, Enrico Toti).
The fourth ship may be Ettore Fieramosca (single unit). Unfortunately this fourth ship is the least clear but some construction details let take under consideration this ship.

There is an Italian Website www.betasom.it specialised in Italian submarines.
If you really care about identification you may send this photo there or let me do this.

Hoping this helps Miro

Thanks Miro, I would like to identify the subs and as you would probably know more that me, I would be grateful if you can help with the ID. I will also visit the website. Thanks again. jnv1

Sorry but I overlooked the fifth ship on your photo:o:o

Simply I had cropped extreme right submarine out when zooming the pic:p:p

As this cropped out ship belongs to the same class as 3 others you have all four Balillas plus Ettore Fieramosca.

Sorry for a bit of confusion once more Miro
