On the 30th April 1982, flying from Wideawake airfield on Ascension island, Flt. Lt. Martin Withers and his crew, flying RAF Vulcan (XM607) launched the first Black Buck bombing operation of the Falklands War. There and back the non-stop flight covered 7,500 miles, lasting 15 hours 45 minutes – at the time, the longest combat flight in history. The Vulcan was refuelled by Victor tankers five times on the outward journey and once on the return journey.

.......and what a palava it was kc! I was there at the time on Ascension Island.

The thing that was missing from the Falklands War (Campaign....War was never declared!) was a bl**dy great aircraft carrier or two with proper aircraft like the Buccaneer capable of attacking Port Stanley airfield as easy as anything and probably hitting the target as well!
Perhaps at last, if they are ever built to completion, the new generation of RN carriers operating with the Typhoon will have strike capability should a target be within closer striking range than Ascension to the Falklands.
The Buccaneer by the way was probably the most powerful and versatile aircraft ever to be operated by the FAA. Fabulous aircraft in all respects.
Anyway......nice picture! Love the Vulcan!

The new Carriers will have Joint Strike Fighters on board Melv, Not The Typhoon.
